Satellite Dish Exclusive!
I have been doing a lot of digging lately and I am proud that I can finally break the news here exclusively in “The Satellite Dish!”
“The Satellite Dish” has learned that over the past two months that Dish Network CEO and Liberty Media Chairman have been working on a deal to merge DirecTV with Dish Network. I have learned that negotiations between the two have heated up with the recent approval of the XM / Sirius by the Department of Justice.
Both satellite companies tried to merge in 2001 when Echostar tried to acquire DirecTV from Hughes for 28.5 billion dollars. The deal was quickly shot down by the Department of Justice, but now with the XM / Sirius merger being approved they feel that a merger between the two could easily pass by the DOJ.
Ergen and Malone were decently spotted in a downtown Denver diner where Eargen was overheard talking about how much bandwidth they would have to offer customers new High Definition content, in fact Charlie was so excited by the thought of it he was heard saying “If my customers want to watch paint dry in HD then I am going to give it to them!”
Also overheard was the planned name of the combined company if the merger is approved, the name mentioned was DishDirect.
Because I am breaking this news first here in the Satellite Dish I expect both companies to go public with their merger plans. As a matter of fact as I have been typing this I have been informed that there is a joint press conference scheduled for today, April 1st, 2008. It should be interesting!

If Dish's last satellite had been lost as was feared I doubt it was have been a "rumor." More like a fire sale. Btw I oppose the XM/ Sirus merger.

Definitely newsworthy but still open to speculation, I beleive that they have never really been out of discussions to merge the two companies. I dont see this as being lame in the least for the consumer as it would have a considerably positive impact for them in more ways than just HD and Mpeg4, this partnership could in effect seriously hurt cable and fios in the television market.
