Satellite Buying Tips (Part 2) & BIO HD on DirecTV

November 28, 2007

Yesterday we gave you some tips on how to choose the best satellite provider for your viewing needs. Today we will give you some tips on how to order your satellite service.

You can order directly from the satellite companies, and chances are that by going this route you will find your best deal; however while you might get the best offer via this route, you might not get the best service. Instead what I recommend is to look for your local satellite retailer and go and talk to them. While it is true you can get “free installation” the old motto holds through in that “you sometimes get what you pay for.”

While ordering directly from the satellite companies will get you installed, ordering through your local retailer will normally get you a better install. Your local retailer is in the service industry and giving their customers the best service is what they are there for and the word of mouth about their quality of service is what keeps them in business. With the free install you get direct from the satellite companies you never know who is going to show up or how they are going to rush to finish your install.

With a local retailer they are more likely to work with you to give you the custom install you are looking for. Yes it may cost you a little bit, but the end results will be worth it. Another advantage of a local retailer is that chances will be good that the people who installed your order will be the ones you will call when you have an issue. Because you are calling the folks who installed you’re your system they will know your specific install and can help you better instead of calling to a far away call center trying to troubleshoot your issues. I also know from experience that sometimes you can make good friendships with your local retailer, as they are always there to make sure you are happy.

Next thing to think about when ordering is what kind of equipment you want. I urge everyone that if you are going to get service to get DVR’s (Digital Video Recorders). While you might not want one you are going to wonder how you lived without one once you get use to watching TV on your time. A DVR allows you to record your favorite shows digitally to a hard drive, which is housed inside the satellite receiver. You can then view programming that you have recorded anytime on your own time.

Don’t cheap out at the install. Get the equipment you may need for the future now, it’s going to cost you less now at the install to get the advanced equipment. If you decide in the future to upgrade the equipment is probably going to cost you more. Remember you always get better equipment deals when you sign up as a new customer, so take advantage of everything they offer.

If you just want a basic install and the best deal possible then call the satellite companies directly, however if you want a more custom install then talk to your local satellite retailer.

Remember you can get what you want, just research and don’t be afraid to ask questions! While the initial costs of moving to satellite are small you should still treat it as making a large investment, after all it is a long-term investment for you and your family for your entertainment dollars, so choose wisely!

In the end no matter if you order directly from the satellite companies or from your local retailer you will still be enjoying all the great programming that satellite television can offer.

Hey Scott, don't forget to mention FTA, Glorystar and Globecast, these also could be valid choices (two of which have no recurring cost) depending on what someone wants to watch.
