Satellite Tidbits

January 25, 2008

On October 24thwe reported here in “The Satellite Dish” about a new service which gives home viewers a third choice for home satellite services.  The service allowed customers to use a small KU band satellite dish with a DSR-410 receiver to subscribe to programming such as Game Show Network, TV Land, The Golf Channel and premium channels such as HBO and Showtime.

It appears that this new service will be a short lived one as it was announced late last week that Comcast is pulling the plug on its Hits2Home KU service.

Skyvision the company that was promoting and selling this KU service has removed any mention of this service from their website.

There has been talk online that subscribers might be able to continue to receive services however they would need a larger C Band satellite dish.  This means moving from a small 2 foot KU dish, to a C band dish which can be 6 feet in size or bigger.

It was a good idea, and from the reaction to the service it appeared to me that there was a market for subscription KU services.

Discount PPV From Dish Network

In an unusual move Dish Network is having a sale this weekend on some of it’s Pay Per View programming.  Customers will be able to enjoy a free preview of the NBA League Pass package, plus discounted PPV programming such as the hit kids movie “Surfs Up” for only 99 cents, plus special event programming, some discounted down to $2.95.

Customers wishing to learn more about this weekend Dish Network PPV sale can find out more at dishnetwork.com.

Oh yeah, I wonder what the closing of HITS means to 4DTV. For years prior to the launch of that package 4DTV has been providing their subscribers the HITS feeds for many channels instead of the master feeds. Hopefully they start providing 4DTV mappings and authorizations for as many of the Digicipher II master feeds that they can ASAP.

DirecTV and Digital Cable are having the Free Preview of League Pass too. NBA always has a free preview around this time of the year to promote the start of the Half Season offer price. In fact, on Tuesday NHL Center Ice will have their annual post-All Star Free Preview, also to kick off their half season offer.
