Interactive Election on DirecTV

October 20, 2008

The folks at DirecTV are thinking outside the box again and for the upcoming election will offer its customers interactive election night coverage.

The special “Election Mix” channel will replace the normal News Mix channel on channel 102 at 7PM Eastern Time on November 4th.  The Election Mix channel will offer viewers a mosaic of the four broadcast network channels plus other news channels including CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and a special alternating feed of BBC America and Comedy Central, this will be all delivered on one screen.  Using their remote viewers will be able to listen to the audio of the channel of their choice and easily switch audio between stations.

In addition live graphics will be on screen offering DirecTV viewers blog posts and updates continuing information on exit poll data, results from Senate races, gubernatorial races and news and quotes from the candidates themselves.

The special “Election Mix” channel will be broadcast to customers in both Standard Definition and High Definition formats.

The special channel will be broadcast until 6 AM Eastern Time or may be extended until a winner has been decided.

This year with DirecTV it will be easy watching the election results come in, I think I know what channel I will be tuned into on election night.

A Cry for XM’s Cinemagic

Since I wrote on Friday that there is a rumor going around that XM’s unique Cinemagic music channel could be getting the axe on November 5th my email box has been filling up asking what can be done to save this channel, the honest answer is I was hoping that you the readers had an idea.

If you have never listened to XM’s Cinemagic I invite you to check it out on XM Channel 27 (DirecTV Channel 822.)

Cinemagic is unlike any audio service you have ever heard before; it plays music from movie soundtracks as well as audio clips, trivia and movie facts from the movies.  Over the years I have turned a lot of movie buffs on to this channel and when you’re a fan it seems like most consider this one of their favorite channels on XM.  I can understand why Sirius is getting ready to cut and combine a lot of programming, but in my opinion Cinemagic should be one of the channels which is spared.

If I hear anything more on the fate of Cinemagic I will be sure to post it here.

Considering that BBC America will be airing BBC World News at the same time as Comedy Central begins their coverage at 10pm ET, they should have Comedy Central replace Fox on the mix since they're ending their coverage at 10pm, although Fox will likely be simulcasting Fox News Channel but with the Fox News logo instead of the Fox News Channel logo, so there's no point in carrying Fox on the mix anyway.
