Are You Ready for DirecTV?
This weekend I went to an end of the summer family picnic, and while it was fun it also opened my eyes on some issues. In speaking to members of my family I found that a vast amount of them are subscribers of DIRECTV. I was also surprised to find that most of them have HDTV’s. Those with DIRECTV HD setups are very excited about HD about all the news that new HD that is coming.
The problem is none of them will be able to see the new HD channels.
The reason why none of them will be able to enjoy DIRECTV’s new HD programming is because they all own older DIRECTV HD equipment. Older units such as the DIRECTV HD DVR with Tivos are only MPEG2 compatible. This older equipment does not support the new MPEG4 technology that these new channels will be broadcast in. In addition most will also need to upgrade to a new satellite dish that can pick up the new HD satellite.
Many of these folks are going to be deeply disappointed when they find out that with their current equipment they will not be able to pick up any of the new channels that DIRECTV will be offering. All of them thought they were DIRECTV HD Ready.
In order to enjoy all the new programming DIRECTV customers will needed MPEG4 compatible receivers as well as a new 5 LNB satellite dish.

I got to admit that this family party was a real eye opener for me. I honestly thought most people were aware that they would need new equipment. None of these folks said that they were aware that they would need new equipment.
So while DIRECTV might be ready with its new HD, you might not be ready for DIRECTV HD.

Directv has bombarded their customers with email, snail mail, telephone calls and messages on their receivers concerning the HD requirements. Is this a family where age and IQ are about equal?
