Dish Launches Obama Channel

October 2, 2008

Dish Network yesterday launched a new channel dedicated to the presidential campaign of Barrack Obama. The new channel which airs on Dish Network channel 73 shows a loop of commercials telling people about who Barack Obama is and tells his story.  Currently the video is a two minute loop which repeats over and over again.

Since this channel has gone online my mailbox has filled up with complaints from angry Dish Network subscribers over this latest channel addition.

In speaking with Dish Network about this new channel I have been told that Dish is not playing favorites by airing this channel but instead are renting out a channel to a party who’s willing to paying for it.

According to the Dish Networks CEO office, “This channel is available to customers subscribing to all packages and is broadcast from the 110° orbital location and will be broadcast though the conclusion of the elections. At this time it is not available to customers on the eastern arc. Please inform customers who inquire that this is paid advertising by the Obama campaign and is not an endorsement of Senator Obama by DISH Network. This space has been purchased similar to any other channel we broadcast, and any other candidate who wishes to purchase a channel through DISH Network will be given the same opportunity. At this time, no other candidates have showed interest in purchasing a channel.”

If the channel offends you remember a great thing about Dish Network receivers is they give you the ability to block channels which you do not want to see.

Sirius XM Gives Choice Early

Sirius XM Satellite Radio has launched their new “best of both” packages early.  Originally scheduled to launch on October 6th the new packages started to roll out on October 1st.

If you are an XM customer you can subscribe to the “Best of Sirius” which gives you such channels as Howard Stern’s Howard 100 and Howard 101 channels, plus NASCAR Radio, NFL radio and a few others. For Sirius customers they can subscribe to the “Best of XM” that includes channels such as The Virus (with Opie and Anthony and the Ron and Fez Show), Oprah and Friends radio and XM Public Radio with Bob Edwards.

Satellite radio subscribers can add the “Best of” packages to their satellite radio subscriptions for an additional $4 a month.

I checked out ch 73 last night. The name of the program identifies it as a paid advertisement: 'Obama for America (Paid Ad)'. Plus, there is always a message on-screen indicating 'Paid Advertisement'. I watched for about 10 minutes, and during that time they aired two different ads (commercials) and one of the Obama videos from the Dem convention (the one that preceeded his acceptance speech). I think this is a very smart move by the campaign to pay for an entire channel for 24/7 promos.

I had my mom check her Dish (cuz I'm at work) and she confirmed that the Guide Info does say that the program is a Paid Ad.

I agree with DishSmish. The info/guide should indicate that the program is a paid political advertisement.

I also agree with James. Dish needs to add Logo and HereTV. DirecTV has them, as do most big cable operators.

perhaps dish should put an interstitial in the programming explaining why it's there, that any other candidate can do the same. it should also include who's paying for the channel--I believe they must do that with all political sponsorships by law. there may be credits on each individual piece of programming, but that may be different from the entity that's paying for the channel itself...

"If the channel offends you remember a great thing about Dish Network receivers is they give you the ability to block channels which you do not want to see." Tell Dish that about channels like Logo. Some people, like me, would like to see more homo-friendly programming!
