Goings and Goings -- Manny, A-Rod and T.O.

March 10, 2009

This has been a week of goings and goings and goings. I’m talking A-Rod, Manny and T.O.

As a Mets fan, I wanted Manny Ramirez on the team. I even thought a simple contract of $25 million a year for two years and a $10 million buyout would work. If Manny wasn’t happy in New York, he gets 10 mill to go away. If the Mets weren’t happy with Manny, they cut him a 10 mill check and off he goes. So basically is was a $60 million contract.I thought that type of contract would keep Manny happy and focused.

You can’t give out mega-year, mega-dollar contracts right now in this depressed economy. But when it was announced that the Mets owners had lost upwards of $300 million in the Bernie Madoff ponzi scheme, I knew the Mets weren’t writing a check for Manny because $300 million is $300 million no matter which pocket or bank it’s in.

So Manny is going .. back to the Dodgers.

For Alex Rodriguez, he’s going away for a while.

Tired of talking about steroid use to the point that now you are an expert? Well now you can become an expert on torn labrums, hip impingement and surgery.

The steroid issue was debatable. Is A-Rod a Hall of Fame or a simple cheat? Will he ever come though in the clutch? Those are baseball debates for the hardcore fan.

Hip surgery? The questions take on an entirely different meaning.

How many games will he miss? Will he come back and still be hobbled? Is the beginning of the end of his career?

For every Chase Utley who comes back from hip surgery, there’s also a Bo Jackson or Britt Burns who doesn’t.

A-Rod is going, but who knows where.

Then, there’s the curious care of Terrell Owens.

The “I Love Me Some Me” Owens, was released from the Dallas Cowboys because his skills are starting to erode at age 35. Perhaps more importantly, is there any more toxic clubhouse presence in professional sports than T.O.?

His run-ins in San Francisco, Philadelphia and now Big D left once-proud franchises shaking. Now, he’s shuffled off to Buffalo and the Bills.

For all his “Me Love Me” talk, he has never captured a Super Bowl ring, but he knows how to throw quarterbacks under the bus.

Just ask Jeff Garcia and Donovan McNabb. Tony Romo? Trent Edwards, I’m sure you’re next.

Maybe T.O. should change his alter ego from “Me Love Me” to the guy from the defunct XFL and call himself “He Hate Me.”

That’ll fit.

Manny? Sorry to see you go to the Dodgers. Hope you have a great year.

A-Rod? Sorry to see you go to the DL. Hope you have a speedy, non-eventual recovery.

T.O.? Sorry dude. I ain’t got no love for ya.

Next question.
