Netflix To Get Its Own ‘Channel’

Streamer To Get Its Own Guide Slot With RCN, Grande & Atlantic Broadband 4/25/2014 9:15 AM

Netflix’s coming debut on MSO-distributed, leased TiVo boxes in the U.S. will feature the streaming giant’s iconic branding and logo alongside other IP apps and services that are offered on the platform.

But the TiVo/Netflix integration by RCN, Atlantic Broadband (starting next week) and by Grande Communications (sometime in May) will run a lot deeper than that. In addition to factoring Netflix fare into the search results, Netflix, as the graphic above from RCN shows, will also get its own channel position on the grid guide, essentially giving it the same footing the operator provides to other premium video channels that are on the linear lineup.

And although Netflix will retain the billing relationship with customers that access the service through these leased TiVo boxes, the backend systems will allow new customers to subscribe to Netflix directly through the box using a three-step process – Account creation (where new subs can redeem a free month of the service), supply payment information, and, finally, agree to the terms of use. Once that's all set up, customers can tap into the Netflix library after clicking the “Start Your Membership Button.”
