More than 100,000 Sci Fi and comic book fanatics are expected to converge on New York City this weekend to attend the annual Comic-Con confab. While the east coast version of the popular convention is not as grandiose as the annual San Diego-based Comic-Con International show, it’s still expected to draw its share of cable networks looking to showcase their popular shows and stars to passionate and loyal fans.
Nearly a dozen cable networks will have presence at the convention, which runs tonight through Sunday (Oct. 16). Cartoon Network and Adult Swim chief marketing Brenda Freeman said the New York version of Comic-Con has a more cozy feel to it than the larger San Diego event, which attracted more than 125,000 attendees this past July.
Cartoon Network and Adult Swim will be very active during the event, with Cartoon hosting panel sessions for such shows as Adventure Time, Regular Show and Ben 10, and Adult Swim rolling out panels for its Venture Bros., Robot Chicken and Black Dynamite shows.
“While the San Diego Comic-Con is currently a larger, broader conference, the New York Comic-Con has grown exponentially within the last few years, attracting fans from not only the northeast, but from the south and mid-west as well,” said Freeman. “It’s still very accessible, and it provides a high touch type of Con experience that allows fans to interact more closely with our brands and show creators. We see it as a prime opportunity both to celebrate existing properties and help introduce key new projects set to premiere in winter and spring.“
Cable highlights during Comic-Con include an Oct. 15 AMC panel for its sophomore zombie series Walking Dead, which debuts its new season Sunday night. Tonight, Animal Planet will discuss its new series Finding Bigfoot, while Syfy hosts a panel with stars from its supernatural drama series Haven.
A&E will offer a Saturday panel with Ryan Buell, star of the network’s Paranormal State, while MTV will offer up a session on the return of animated series Beavis and Butt-Head.
