In a sampling strategy straight from the playbook of premium cable networks, Netflix starting Friday is making the first episode of political drama House of Cards available for free to anyone in its territories around the world for one month.

The first episode of the first season is available at netflix.com/houseofcards. Netflix reportedly spent $100 million to secure the rights to House of Cards, outbidding cable networks including AMC Networks and HBO.

Discovery Communications, trying to milk Oprah Winfrey’s exclusive interview with alleged doper Lance Armstrong for all it's worth, will provide a free live video stream at Oprah.com of the two-night event airing on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network starting at 9 p.m. Eastern Thursday.

In addition, Discovery is making the Internet stream available to Comcast, DirecTV and Verizon, which will offer access to it on their own websites. The programmer extended the option to other affiliates as well.

Time Warner Inc.’s Turner Broadcasting System and Warner Bros. Television Group announced a deal with Netflix for complete past seasons of animated and live-action programming from Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. Animation and Adult Swim, as well as the TNT’s serialized drama Dallas.

The first two seasons of TNT’s remake of Dallas, produced by Warner Horizon Television, will be available exclusively via Netflix in January 2014.

NBC Universal announced its sixth carriage deal in about eight weeks Thursday, this time with the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative, a group that represents more than 1,500 rural utilities and affiliates in 48 states.

According to NBCU, the deal includes expansive rights to carry the Olympics, on-demand content from the programming giant’s cable and broadcast properties and TV Everywhere-like authentication rights that give customers access to live channels on several different platforms in and out of the home.

Cablevision Systems and Viacom headed into the weekend in the midst of negotiating a carriage renewal deal for 19 of the media company’s networks, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV, with their current agreement set to expire Dec. 31.

Viacom and Cablevision reps declined to comment on the negotiations.

According to a source familiar with the discussions, the two sides are talking but “there’s still plenty of ground to cover.”

The duo will be live from New York's Times Square on Dec. 31 from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET. It is the sixth consecutive year the pair will co-host the program.

CNN correspondents will provide reports from celebrations across the country throughout the night: Isha Sesay in Times Square; John Zarella in Kew West, Fla.; and Gary Tuchman in Eastport, Maine.
