Lands Deal to Deliver Service Bundle to Seven Hotels in Chicago and Michigan

The growing business service arm of Comcast has landed a deal to supply voice trunking, HDTV, and Ethernet-based Internet services to seven hotel properties run by Raymond Management Company, including five in greater Chicago and two in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Financial details were not disclosed, but the deal covers about 1,000 rooms, and is coming way of Comcast Business Hospitality, a recently launched division that will do battle in the sector against competitors such as LodgeNet, which emerged from a Chapter 11 reorganization in March.

Suddenlink CEO Jerry Kent signaled he is ready to deliver more tailored programming packaged to subs if Washington can address the issue of bundled channels at the wholesale level.

In response to the introduction of Sen. John McCain's a la carte bill, Kent said in a statement, "There is clearly a need for greater flexibility on the part of distributors like us to offer smaller, more economical packages of channels that are better targeted to diverse consumer interests and incomes."

Google Fiber’s march into the Kansas City area continued Monday evening as the Gladstone, Mo., city council voted in favor of bringing the company’s 1 Gig network to the community.

Approval clears the way for Google Fiber to string its network into Gladstone, a town located just north of Kansas City. Gladstone has a population of about 25,784 and roughly 12,148 housing units, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

Cable engineering vet Tom Lookabaugh has been named executive vice president of R&D at CableLabs, where he will focus on platforms that enable high-speed access and next-gen services.

Lookabaugh is joining Louisville, Colo.-based CableLabs on June 10, according to a spokeswoman. He’s coming on board following a career with a variety of technology companies and joint ventures, including several that focused on cable.
