Cablevision Bids to Put Wi-Fi
On N.Y. Commuter Trains

BETHPAGE, N.Y.Cablevision
Systems
submitted a proposal
to the Metropolitan Transportation
Authority
to provide
Wi-Fi network access on some
2,264 Long Island Rail Road and
Metro-North passenger train
cars within 12 months of selection
— at no cost to the transit
agency — that would offer free
access to cable broadband customers
and “reasonable” rates
for non-subscribers.

Other companies submitting
bids for the MTA’s Wi-Fi project
included AT&T, RailBand Group
LLC, Mastech Enterprises and
Mobilite. There is no set date by
which the MTA will select a provider,
according to MTA spokeswoman
Marjorie Anders.

Cedar Point Debuts Suite
Of Visual Voice Applications

DERRY, N.H.Cedar Point
Communications
is going beyond
caller ID on the TV, with
the launch of a suite of visual
communication applications
for cable-system operators that
includes several variations of
voice mail and outbound calling
features that work across
multiple devices.

The SafariFusion Visual Communications
Suite takes advantage
of capabilities of Cedar
Point’s SafariFusion Application
Platform, introduced last fall.
The applications are compatible
with CableLabs’ Enhanced
TV Binary Interchange Format
and Tru2way specs and can be
delivered to any device, including
set-top boxes, broadbandconnected
TVs, PCs, iPads,
tablets and mobile devices.

The first implementation of
SafariFusion Visual Communications
Suite will begin in July,
with general availability of the
software in September.
