Radio's 'El Cucuy' To Host Azteca Show

Spanish-language radio personality Renán Almendárez Coello, known as “El Cucuy” to his legions of fans nationwide, has partnered with Azteca America to host a new weekly show, AztePacá (a play on words between Azteca, and the Spanish of “get over here”), a two-hour Saturday night variety show.

Telemundo, Grupo Televisa Settle Suit
(Excerpted from a 1/23/2008 article on the Broadcasting and Cable Web site)

Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo and Mexican programmer Grupo Televisa settled a four-year-old lawsuit filed by Televisa. Details of the settlement were not revealed, and Telemundo would not comment on particulars. Televisa’s suit alleged that Telemundo interfered with Televisa’s contract with actor Mauricio Islas. The federal courts ruled that Televisa was entitled to pursue its claims and that the contract between Televisa and Islas was valid. According to a statement, “Telemundo will abide by these rulings and pledges to respect Televisa’s rights in its contracts with actors and artists.”

  • SPTI Reteams with Telemundo According to Variety, Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) and Telemundo have teamed up once more to co-produce a telenovela, Doña Bárbara. Based on a Latin American classic, it will run for 120 episodes in high-definition. It follows the companies’ first joint effort, Zorro: La espada y la rosa (The Sword and the Rose), which has become one of Telemundo’s higher-rated telenovelas in the U.S. and top seller, globally. SPTI will distribute the series in North and South America, while Telemundo International will handle distribution throughout Europe, Middle East, Africa, Australia and Asia. Sales were scheduled to begin at NATPE.

Sorpresa!, the Hispanic’s children TV network, named Samantha Brown
senior director, Western Division Affiliate Relations, and Yvette Sanchez programming manager. Brown, a former executive at ESPN Networks, USA Networks, United Paramount Network and Career Entertainment Television, will be responsible for expanding the network’s affiliate base in the West Coast markets. Sanchez, a former executive at Discovery Communications Latin America, will provide additional programming capabilities including increasing original programming initiatives and co-production opportunities for the ¡Sorpresa! Network and digital community.

Jeff Valdez, the founder of SíTV, was appointed chairman of the board of Que Pasa Corporation, the Scottsdale, Arizona-based Latino bicultural online community. Valdez also serves on the boards of Sí TV and Maya Entertainment, a Latino-targeted film distribution company.

Charlie Echeverry, a former executive at Walt Disney Internet Group, was named senior VP, digital sales, for Univision Online, the interactive subsidiary of Univision Communications. Echeverry will be responsible for growing advertising and sponsorship revenue for Univision Online in the western region and national sales for mobile marketing.
