Telemundo Anchor Collins To Exit

Spanish-language TV veteran María Antonieta Collins is bidding adieu to Telemundo, the network she joined in September 2005 after almost two decades working as news anchor for rival network Univision. Collins, who was hired as the sole host of three-hour daily variety morning show Cada día con Maria Antonieta, opted not to renew her contract with Telemundo, which expires in August.

Galavision To Premiere Reality-Makeover Show

Galavision, the nation’s largest Spanish-language cable network, this week will premiere Moda al Rescate (Fashion to the Rescue), a weekly reality-makeover show focusing on “style-challenged” real people, who undergo a makeover after having experienced a life-changing event, such as first-time motherhood or starting a new job, according to the network.

MTVTr3s, Comcast, TW Team On Sweepstakes

Quinceañera fever is on the air (and online). On the heels of the Mun2/WWE ultimate quinceañera sweepstakes (Hispanic TV Update, 01/16/2008) comes Quiero Mis Quinces Sweepstakes, an ongoing partnership between MTVTr3s, Comcast and Time Warner in key markets to give away more than $60,000 that six young girls can spend towards their quince (15th) celebration party.

Since taking over ¡Sorpresa!’s programming efforts in April 2007, María Badillo has been charged with supervising original productions and acquisitions, and assuring a relevant program lineup targeting preschool kids, tweens and teens. Under Badillo’s direction, the Juniper Content-owned network in October premiered its first original production Luz, Cámara, ¡Sorpresa!, a youth film competition in partnership with the Hamptons International Film Festival. Badillo, a native of Mexico, spoke to Hispanic TV Update about the network’s multiplatform approach, the challenges of targeting Hispanic kids and a re-branding effort including a new logo and tagline that will begin to be introduced progressively starting Feb. 21.
 
 

ESPN Deportes Inks Bright House Carriage Contract

Bright House Networks has rolled out ESPN Deportes on its digital-basic lineup in the Tampa market. The Jan. 31 launch, terms of which were not disclosed, makes the 24-7 Spanish-language sports network available to 600,000 of the operator’s digital-basic customers in Tampa on channel 153. The service adjoins ESPN’s suite of digital services on Bright House’s systems, which positions ESPNews, ESPNU and ESPN Classic at channels 150, 151 and 152, respectively.

Manuel Abud joins KXTX-TV

The Telemundo executive fired from the Spanish-language network’s top Los Angeles outlet in the aftermath of the Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa/Mirthala Salinas scandal has landed a new gig. Former KVEA-TV vice president/general manager Manuel Abud has assumed the same title and job at NBC-owned Telemundo's KXTX-TV in Dallas. Abud lost the KVEA job last summer after station anchor/reporter Mirthala Salinas revealed that she was having an affair with Villaraigosa.
