Univision, Televisa Postpone Trial

The highly anticipated trial between Univision and programming partner and supplier Grupo Televisa has been postponed until July 1 at the request of both parties. The showdown was scheduled to kick off April 29 in a California federal court, and revolves around a 3-year-old lawsuit between the parties.

MegaTV, LATV Kick Off Upfront Season

Emerging Hispanic networks Mega TV and youth-oriented LATV hosted their first upfront presentations in New York City on April 24 and May 1, respectively, promising advertisers a slate of new programming ranging from high-definition telenovelas to talent-search competitions, reality TV and plenty of product placement opportunities.

Azteca América Unveils 2008-2009 Lineup

In a radical shift from last year’s upfront presentation, Azteca América this year is pitching programming “Made in Mexico” but tailored to U.S. Hispanic audiences. The network, which decided to skip its usual New York City upfront event in favor of client-meetings nationwide, is putting shows and newscasts from Mexico-based TV Azteca at the forefront of its programming strategy.

Starting May 19, and to kick off its third season, PBS Kids will introduce original Spanish-language music and content, including Miss Rosa, a bilingual teacher who will help kids with their homework and introduce phrases and words in Spanish throughout the network’s English-language programming. After auditioning over 3,000 people nationwide, PBS tapped Jennifer Peña, a teacher turned actress, as the real-life Latina role model who will appear in special segments within two-hour on-air blocks throughout the entire season. Peña, a 27-year-old Florida certified teacher, spoke to Hispanic TV Update about her new role and the role television can play in helping children understand other cultures and languages.
 
 

Disney Launches Spanish-Language Magazine For Parents

Disney En Familia, a new Spanish-language magazine for Latino parents, will publish its premiere issue in July, The Walt Disney Co. announced. Filled with parenting tips, travel and party ideas, recipes and advice on preserving cultural traditions, the controlled-circulation quarterly will reach 350,000 Latino families with children between the ages of four and 12.

ESPN Deportes On Nielsen’s Ratings Report

Nielsen and ESPN Deportes in April reached an agreement to report program ratings in Nielsen’s U.S. Hispanic cable service, known as the Nielsen Homevideo Index Hispanics service. NHIH data for ESPN Deportes is available as of April 28.

Michael Bollo has joined V-me as vice president of sales and sponsorship. He will be based in New York City and report to Frank Donaldson, senior vice president and director of sales. Prior to joining the Spanish-language digital network, Bollo was vice president of network sales at Univision. He joined V-me a few days before the network hosted its first upfront event on May 14.

Kate Condon has joined Juniper Content Corporation’s ¡Sorpresa! as executive producer of Sorpresatv.com. A former Web designer and producer for AOL, Condon will be charged with expanding the online capabilities, digital community and audience reach for the Hispanic children’s network. Prior to her tenure at AOL, Condon served in a similar capacity at Henninger Media Services, where she worked with Discovery Channel Networks. She will be based in the Washington D.C. area and report to Chris Firestone, Executive Vice President of Digital Media and Broadcast.

Luis Roldán has been named senior vice president and general manager of MEGA TV in Puerto Rico. Roldán will oversee the retransmission of Mega TV on WSJU-TV (Channel 30). Prior to joining Mega TV Roldán served as president and general manager for WKAQ-TV, Telemundo's flagship station in Puerto Rico.
