Univision to Launch VOD Fare in January

On the heels of announcing its 2008-2009 lineup and first quarter results, Univision Communications this week said it will jump into the video on demand arena next year, offering up to 1,000 hours of programming across genres, including full matches from the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

DirecTV Unveils Hispanic Ad Campaign

DirecTV Más took the opportunity at last week’s gathering of media buyers and planners in New York to officially unveil its new advertising campaign targeting U.S. Hispanics. The television campaign, which mostly takes aim at cable providers with taglines such as “Libérate del cable” (Free Yourself of Cable) features Mexican actor Andrés García, and Ana María Polo, the host of Telemundo’s Caso Cerrado courtroom show, in separate spots urging viewers to dump cable in favor of the digital, weather-proof signal of DirecTV.

MLS - ¡Sorpresa! Spotlight User-Generated Fare

Juniper Content Corporation’s ¡Sorpresa! Network has partnered with Major League Soccer to search for the next “Reporterito” (Little Reporter), someone between the ages of 6 and 17 who will report live from this year’s MLS All-Star Game in Toronto and the MLS Cup 2008 in Los Angeles.

LAT-TV Ceases Operations

Houston-based LAT-TV, has suspended operations citing the “inability to secure a source of ongoing funding.” In a brief email note to contacts and sources, a top executive said the Board of Directors of LATTV determined on May 6, 2008 that “because of the company’s inability to secure a source of ongoing funding to continue operations, it was necessary stop broadcasting operations accordingly and to proceed with a company shutdown.” The note added that tapes and masters are being returned to all distribution and production houses this week. LAT-TV launched in May 2006 and in 2007 reached a major affiliation deal to be carried on an additional 22 stations owned by Equity Media Holdings.

Since taking over advertising sales for Discovery’s portfolio of Hispanic networks in the U.S. in 2005, Víctor Parada has been instrumental in getting more advertisers onboard with media buys that go beyond the traditional 30-second spot. Although the network didn’t hold an upfront presentation this year, Parada spoke to Hispanic TV Update during Upfronts week in New York about his network’s record-breaking ratings in prime-time and about the art of integrating clients’ brands into programming.
 







 

Univision’s Revenue up 5.8%

Univision Communications saw net revenue increase by 5.8% in the first quarter to $458.8 million from $433.7 million a year earlier, with its TV and radio units delivering key growth, the leading Spanish-language media conglomerate announced.

ESPN Deportes Reloads

True to its upfront presentation theme, ESPN Deportes “reloaded” media buyers with information about its multimedia platforms, programming initiatives old and new, and revealed early Nielsen returns. During the event, held May 13, executives preached the sports giant’s corporate multiplatform creed, emphasizing that ESPN Deportes was the only player in the Spanish-language sports space that could deliver via TV; online; the ESPN Deports Radio network; the ESPN Deportes La Revista magazine that is available through subscription and on the newsstand; ESPN Deportes Mobile; and through “en vivo”(grass roots) initiatives.

María Badillo has been promoted to svp of programming of Juniper Content Corporation’s ¡Sorpresa! Ms. Badillo joined the Hispanic children network in 2007 and has been instrumental in the network’s program scheduling, on-air promotion activities and the recently re-branding effort. Most recently she helped established a multi-platform partnership with Major League Soccer to promote sports among kids through broadband, programming and grassroots efforts.

Daniel Taitz has joined Univision Communications as svp of business affairs for the Affiliate Relations team. He will report to Tonia O’Connor, executive vice president of Affiliate Sales and Marketing. Prior to joining the Spanish-language network, Mr. Taitz served as chief administrative officer and general counsel for Oxygen Media Corporation. Univision also promoted John Kozak as vp of network sales for the Univision Networks in New York.

Denisse Oller has been tapped by Telemundo (Channel 47) in New York to host her own cooking TV segment, A la mesa con Denisse (To the Table With Denisse). Prior to joining Telemundo, Oller spent almost two decades as host of Univision local news, Univision 41.
