Azteca Moves News Operations to Mexico City

Faced with low ratings and a weak advertising market, Azteca America this week moved its national and local news operations to Mexico City to merge with those of parent TV Azteca. The move, announced late last month, resulted in the layoff of about 30 people, most of them from the news division.

Telemundo Cancels Morning Show; Realigns Sports, News

NBC-owned Telemundo has pulled the plug on Cada Día, a weekday morning, citing poor ratings. “This was a very tough decision. Cada Día is a show we believed in and were very enthusiastic about, but it did not deliver the necessary performance to sustain the show,” the network said in a statement. Separately Telemundo announced a reorganization of its news and sports division.

Red Planet Media Readies Mobile VOD in Spanish

Red Planet Media this month is expected to announce the launch of three mobile VOD channels aimed at U.S. Hispanics. The new channels, which will launch on AT&T and Sprint phones, include Spanish-language movies, telenovelas and an international newscast updated daily.

Hispanic TV broadcasters and cable network executives are heading this week to San Antonio, Texas, where they will showcase their programming lineup at the first annual Texas Hispanic Upfront (June 5.) Hispanic TV Update spoke to Scott Keeler, the Upfront Chair and regional sales manager for ABC Radio Networks en Español, about details of the upcoming event and why it was important for Texas to hold its own upfront.
 






 

Univision Readies Negotiation of Retransmission Consent

Distributors can expect a letter from Univision Communications this week declaring its intent to negotiate retransmission-consent deals for its TV stations. How much compensation the Spanish-language media giant will get will become apparent during negotiations in the weeks and months ahead. But Univision executives will be pushing hard for the stations that carry the top-ranked Spanish-language service and its broadcast sibling Telefutura, as part of a far-reaching distribution pact.

TV Azteca to Air U.S. Hispanic Version of Desperate Housewives

Mexico City-based TV Azteca has picked up the U.S. Hispanic version of Desperate Housewives, produced by Disney Latin America for leading U.S. Spanish-language net Univision. Azteca will air "Amas de Casas Desesperadas" on Canal 13, its main channel normally reserved for Mexican programming, starting June 9. In contrast to Univision's weekly programming plan, Azteca will be stripping the skein daily Monday-Friday -- like a telenovela -- in its peak primetime slot. While "Amas" features Mexican thesps Lucia Mendez and Ana Serradilla, its other leads are from other Latin American countries.

Time Warner Rolls Out Three Hispanic Networks

Time Warner Cable’s Palm Desert system in California has launched México 22, Once México and CB Tu Televisión Michoacán, all from Mexico-based Alterna TV. The three channels debuted earlier this month on Time Warner’s Desert Cities system. That system serves Coachella Valley, Banning and Yucca Valley and is part of Time Warner’s San Diego Division.

Daniel “el Ruso” Brailovsky is returning to ESPN Deportes as co-host of Mexican soccer studio show Fútbol Picante. Brailovsky, who spent the last season as the head coach of Mexico’s first division team Club América, had worked as a co-host of the show from 2005 through 2007 but left to take charge of the club.

Ibra Morales, president of Telemundo’s station group, has left the company. He will not be replaced, and Telemundo president Don Browne will assume the responsibilities now held by Morales. In a brief statement, the company said: “Under the consolidated model established over a year ago, Telemundo will take the opportunity to review the station group organization and architecture.”
