WAPA America Inks Deals With TW, Bright House

Starting mid-July, Time Warner’s New York City cable system will begin to carry WAPA America, the cable and satellite superstation of Puerto Rico’s WAPA-TV, as part of its Hispanic tier, the companies confirmed. The agreement, whose financial terms were not disclosed, comes on the heels of WAPA’s carriage deal with Bright House Network, who in March began to carry the Puerto Rico’s station on its digital tier (channel 63) in Orlando, Florida.

Mun2 to Relaunch Web Site With More Social Networking

Mun2 is relaunching its Web site (holamun2.com) to include more interactive and social networking features for users to build profiles to provide their email address, their age, and interests. But as the network is quick to point out, the goal is not to compete with the likes of MySpace or Facebook, but to integrate the TV channel with user-generated content originating in viewers' computers and mobile devices.

Fox Sports en Español Scores With Copa Libertadores Semi-Final

Fox Sports en Español on June 3 scored its highest ratings this year, when nearly one million total viewers—adults 18-49 and males 18-49—tuned in to watch the semi-final match between LDU of Quito, Ecuador and Mexico’s club América, the network said. The live telecast delivered more viewers for FSE than Telemundo and Telefutura in the male 18-49 demo and was broadcast at 9 pm (EST) / 6 pm (PST).

Frank Donaldson this year was tapped as senior vice president and director of advertising sales for V-me, where he is charged with attracting ad dollars to the fledgling Spanish-language network. Donaldson, a former Univision executive, spoke to Hispanic TV Update about his network’s first upfront ever and the outlook for this year’s upfront market.
 





 

Univision Launches DTV 'Squad'

Univision Communications launched a boots-on-the-ground campaign as the next phase of its digital-TV-transition education effort. The announcement of the so-called Escuadrón Digital, or Digital Squad, came the same day the company was saluted for its DTV-education efforts at a Hill hearing on the DTV transition. The broadcaster received a Service to America award from the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation for its DTV-education campaign, the first to target Hispanic viewers when it launched last October.

Court May Delay Media Giants’ Case

The long-awaited face-off between Spanish-language media giants Univision and Televisa in an L.A. district court may be postponed again. In a June 10 court filing, Mexican media giant Televisa requested that the date be shifted from July 1 to September. Move was in response to Univision's request, filed Friday, for a week’s delay to July 8 because of scheduling conflicts caused by the July Fourth holiday. The date has already been moved several times. The most recent was on April 29, when a judge asked the companies to try to reach an out-of-court settlement to their three-year litigation.

Joseph A. Garcia, the CFO of Spanish Broadcasting System has been appointed by the company’s shareholders to the Board of Directors. Garcia, who is charged with SBS’s financial affairs, operational and administrative matters, has led several key acquisitions of broadcasting stations and other assets. He also was behind the taking of the company public in November 1999. Prior to joining SBS, Garcia spent 13 years in international financial planning positions with Philip Morris (Altria) and Revlon.
