Telemundo, Televisa in Content Deal

Mexican television, long dominated by the duopoly of Grupo Televisa and TV Azteca, is about to welcome content from an unlikely, third player: NBC Universal’s Telemundo.

After a lengthy negotiating process, NBC Universal’s Telemundo signed a programming agreement with Mexico’s Grupo Televisa to distribute original programming in Mexico. The deal, announced earlier this week, includes thousands of hours of Telemundo programs such as telenovelas, news and sports to be broadcast in Televisa’s Channel 9.

Sorpresa Joins Comcast Package

!Sorpresa!, the Juniper Content Corporation-owned Hispanic children’s network, on March 31st will launch on Comcast Cable Latino and Cable Latino Completo, Comcast´s Hispanic packages, on channel 617 in the Fresno, CA DMA, which includes Fresno, Merced, Los Baños, Visalia and Tulare.

AlternaTV Secures Texas Launch

AlternaTV, the Mexico City-based distributor of Spanish-language programming, has signed a distribution agreement with San Marcos, Texas-based Grande Communications, which gives AlternaTV a four-channel launch in the Texas market.

Earlier this month, Michael Rodríguez, the recently appointed senior vice president of sales for Telemundo, began a four-week road show meeting with clients around the country. The push is part of NBC’s new approach to the traditional upfront presentation, which is replacing the annual glossy, star-studded event at Radio City Music Hall with what the network calls a “client-centric” approach to its programming. Rodríguez spoke to Hispanic TV Update about Telemundo's presentations and the importance of producing its own content.
 




 

Tecate Launches Ad Campaign With Character

Featuring its new tag line “Con Carácter,” Mexican imported beer brand Tecate has launched a multimedia campaign, featuring schedules on a number of Spanish-language networks, including Fox Sports en Espanol. The brand, imported exclusively in the U.S. by Heineken USA, took the gloves off the “With Character” campaign on the March 14 edition of Telefutura’a Sólo Boxeo Tecate, the weekly boxing show it sponsors on the broadcast network.

Time Warner Kicks ESPN Deportes Into High Gear in L.A.

ESPN Deportes will add 1 million homes to its subscriber count with the launch of the Spanish-language network in Time Warner Cable’s Los Angeles region. The network’s launch on Time Warner Cable’s variety digital tier coincides with the network[s exclusive Spanish-language telecasts of soccer’s 2008 CONCACAF U-23 Tournament from which two countries will advance to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Isidro Gonzalez has been appointed director of sales, interactive and integrated marketing at Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS).He will be charged with overseeing all interactive sales across the SBS properties. Prior to joining SBS, Gonzalez was president of sales for CMT NewsProNet and was part of the team that launched the Latin American version of The Weather Channel.

Gary Bonilla has been appointed svp global creative strategy at Nickelodeon Network. Prior to joining Nickelodeon, Bonilla held the position of vp & strategic services director of Wing Latino, the New York-based Hispanic advertising agency.

Spanish Broadcasting System this week announced the incorporation of its wholly-owned film subsidiary, Megafilms. The company will produce Spanish-language films, including full-length features, miniseries, telenovelas, documentaries for domestic and international distribution.
