Dish CEO Clayton Chastises Cable, Broadcasters

Washington -- In rostrum-thumping remarks complete with “Hallelujahs” and “Amens,” Dish president and CEO Joe Clayton criticized “incumbent broadcasting, cable and content companies” for refusing “to challenge the status quo.”  He said such initiatives would force them “to embrace innovation … invest in the future or incur some risk” – suggesting that those industries are not truly committed to such processes.

Discovery Drops Decade-Long SilverDocs Support

Discovery Channel has abandoned its support and partnership in the annual “SilverDocs” documentary festival. Discovery had collaborated with the American Film Institute, its Silver Spring, Maryland, neighbor, since the event’s inception in 2003.
This year’s June 19-23 program has been renamed “AFI Docs.”  Car-maker Audi has stepped into the major role of presenting sponsor, mirroring its support for the “AFI Fest” in Los Angeles in November.

The vote -- 75-24 bipartisan support -- triggered concerns that the decade-old ban on all Internet-related taxation may be faltering, despite the political smackdown on tax increases.
