Philadelphia – Put a bunch of cable guys in a boat together, and they’re bound to row together in perfectly synchronicity, right?
So says Steve Burke. Here, in the City of Brotherly Love (and, as we were reminded repeatedly this morning, Rocky Balboa), Comcast’s COO told the tech crowd that the cable fraternity would find ways of making their two key joint ventures — the Clearwire/Sprint WiMax and Canoe projects — succeed.
“If the force pushing everybody together is strong enough, it will overcome individual company differences," Burke said. "My bet is that on these two [joint ventures], the forces pushing us together are so great that we’ll stay together.”
Meanwhile, on the following CTO panel, the talk was of bandwidth — paradoxically, the MSOs want to deliver more bandwidth, but not, you know, too much.
How much is too much? Check this out: Cox’s Chris Bowick says one subscriber downloaded the equivalent of 188 DVD movies in 30 days. "That’s a lot of porn," quipped Leslie Ellis, who moderated the panel.

* Motorola Gets ‘Deeper’ On Fiber: Its expanded Broadband Access Network portfolio, according to the company, will let cable operators drive fiber closer to the home while protecting their investments in existing infrastructure.
* Harmonic Floats RFoG With CommScope: Harmonic becomes latest to jump on the “RF over glass” concept, announcing that it is working with CommScope to ensure product compatibility.
* SCTE Elects Board Members: SCTE announces the board members for the 2008-’09 term.
* Cox Tracks Field Techs With TOA’s Software: MSO will deploy customer-appointment and mobile workforce management systems from TOA Technologies to schedule, route and manage its nearly 6,000 field service technicians.
* Arris Works With BlackArrow Ad Systems: The two vendors have completed interoperability testing between the Arris video-on-demand delivery system and BlackArrow’s addressable advertising system.

* Vidéotron is deploying Aurora Networks‘ Fiber Deep products throughout the greater Montreal area, passing 1.8 million homes.
* SCTE will host its first Canadian summit, in early February 2009 in Toronto, SCTE president and CEO John Clark announced Wednesday.
* Arris announced the availability of "ergonomically designed" optical passives in the OM4100 node fiber tray and field splice enclosure packages within its 1-GHz CHP CORWave system. The new optical components allow plug-and-play features in multiple wavelength systems.
* Omnitron Systems Technology announced the availability of a new fiber-to-fiber media converter and the addition of Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) products to its iConverter product family.
* LiquidxStream Systems and Camiant announced that they have completed interoperability testing between LiquidxStream’s LxS-3216 Universal Edge QAM and Camiant’s Universal Edge Resource Manager.
* Horizon Semiconductors and Scopus Video Networks announced the integration of Horizon’s Hz4210 system-on-a-chip with Scopus’ Integrated Receiver Processor (IRP-3910), a multichannel decoder/processor/down-converter unit.
