ESPN Goes Deep With Big East

ESPN and the Big East Conference have a new deal ensuring broader football and basketball coverage from the 16-college group beginning next season and lasting for the next six years.

“We've had a long and very robust history with each other, but today's deal is not about business as usual, it's not just a continuation of our current deal,” said John Wildhack, ESPN's senior vice president of programming, acquisitions and strategy.

USA Set to Debut Ring of Fire

Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story will make its exclusive television debut on USA Network April 20 at 9 p.m. (EST/PST), the network said Tuesday.

The film, directed by Dan Klores and Ron Berger, chronicles the life of six-time world boxing champion Emile Griffith, who killed then-champion Benny "Kid" Paret in the ring in 1962.

NFL Network Goes Bowling

NFL Network will air the 18th annual Insight Bowl in HD Friday, Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. (EST).

The game, from Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., pits Texas Tech against Minnesota.

Former Super Bowl-winning coach Dick Vermeil will serve as game analyst with play-by-play announcer Derrin Horton and sideline reporter Alex Flanagan.

Miss America to Sin City

The 2006 Miss America Pageant will be held at the Aladdin Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Country Music Television announced Wednesday.

CMT will air the event live Saturday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. (EST/PST).

ABC dropped the rights to air the Miss America Pageant last year, and the event had been held in Atlantic City, N.J., for the past 84 years.

Steven Blumenfeld has joined the network as chief technological officer. He had been vice president and chief operating officer of America Online Inc.’s AOL by Phone.

Frank Lentz has joined Current as VP, creative affairs. He had been executive producer of the Motion Picture and Television Fund.

ESPN Rolls Out New SportsCenter Ads

ESPN has been rolling out a new batch of “This Is SportsCenter” commercials throughout the week.

The six new spots, created by ad agency Wieden + Kennedy New York, were shot in October on the network’s campus in Bristol, Conn.

Cancer Claims Turner’s Ward

Walter Ward, director of communications for Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves, died May 8 following a long battle with cancer, Turner Broadcasting System Inc. said Tuesday.

The 42-year-old Ward had been with Turner since 1996, and was the former director of public relations for Turner Network Television and TBS Superstation.
