Olympusat Anime Channel To Air As Premium SVOD Service

Cablevision Systems will offer the anime-themed FUNimation channel as part of its subscription video on demand lineup, the MSO announced Friday.

The 40 million subscriber Olympusat service will retail at a suggested price of $6.95 per month and will feature anime titles from Japan dubbed into English, according to Olympusat officials.

Avail-TVN has inked two initial customers for its subscription video-on-demand movie service, Verizon Communications’ FiOS and the Redbox Instant by Verizon joint venture between the telco and Coinstar.

The Avail-TVN ViewNow service offers a catalog of thousands of hours of movie content that can be delivered in MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 formats, as well as in a range of adaptive bit-rate (ABR) profiles for such devices as PCs and Apple iOS smartphones and tablets. The service includes download rights on a large number of titles.

The recent exclusive film deal that Netflix struck with Disney is a "game changer," according to Jeff Cuban, executive vice president, AXS TV/Magnolia Pictures, echoing comments made by Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos during the UBS Media conference this week.

Video-on-demand systems and software vendor Concurrent has extended its MediaHawk VX video delivery software to deliver VOD to Internet-connected TVs, including those from Sony, Samsung, Phillips, LG, Panasonic and Toshiba.  

The Duluth, Ga.-based company said it has been “working closely with a major European operator,”which it declined to identify, to deploy VOD to smart TVs. In January 2012, Concurrent announced a deal with Polish cable operator Vectra to deploy MediaHawk VX for multiscreen-video services.

Continuing to augment the distribution lineup for its Development League, the NBA has scored a deal with YouTube that will showcase 350 of the circuit’s contests during the 2012-13 season.

The games will be available the NBA D-League YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/nbadleague and through a YouTube video player on the league's at www.nba.com/dleague.

NBCUniversal’s "Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together" live, one-hour benefit telethon that aired Friday, Nov. 2, generated nearly $23 million in donations for the American Red Cross.

NBCU and the American Red Cross said a record number of individual donations were received for the not-for-profit relief organization between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m. Eastern on Friday, Nov. 2 -- more website and phone traffic than any Red Cross benefit telethon over the last five years.
