Rogers Adds NCAA Gridiron, Hoops Fare

Rogers Cable Inc. said Thursday that it will add more than 350 NCAA college-football and college-basketball games to its “Super Sports Pak.”

The NCAA contests join packages from the National Football League (NFL Sunday Ticket), Major League Baseball (MLB Extra Innings), the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR In Car) and the National Hockey League (NHL Center Ice).

Comcast: We’re Not Target of Baltimore Probe

Comcast Corp. is one of the local companies that have been swept into the investigation by federal authorities into the financial and political dealings of the Baltimore City Council.

Comcast answered the subpoenas about eight months ago, spokesman David Nevins confirmed. The existence of the subpoenas was publicized earlier this week in an article in the Baltimore Sun.

Debates on-Demand for Charter

Charter Communications Inc. will make the final two presidential debates available via free video-on-demand in select systems.

The debates will appear under the MSO’s “More” menu, in a category called “Election 2004,” in Charter systems using nCUBE Corp. and Scientific-Atlanta Inc. VOD gear.

Rommes Joins Arris

Richard Rommes has joined Arris Group Inc. as senior vice president of sales.

Rommes had been major accounts manager at Pacific Broadband/Juniper Networks Inc.

At Arris, he will oversee the Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications Inc. and Adelphia Communications Corp. accounts.

HDNet Corner-Kicks MLS Second-Half Sked

Major League Soccer and HDNet released the schedule for the second half of the league’s regular season Wednesday.

HDNet will air a total of 36 live HD telecasts through the 2004 MLS season, including MLS Cup Playoff games through the conference finals Nov. 6.

The schedule (all times EST):

• Saturday, Aug. 7: D.C. United at San Jose Earthquakes, 10 p.m.

• Wednesday, Aug. 18: Kansas City Wizards at Columbus Crew, 7:30 p.m.

My Music Choice Feels Grande in Texas

Digital-audio service Music Choice will launch a broadband version of its interactive My Music Choice in Texas next month.

My Music Choice for Broadband will kick off in the 65,000-subscriber Grande Communications Inc. system in San Marcos, according to Music Choice CEO Dave Del Becarro.

It’ll work like Music Choice’s interactive cable version, which is currently carried on Mediacom Communications Corp. systems in Illinois. That service allows consumers to custom-build their own music channels.

Playboy Consolidates, Forms New Group

Playboy Enterprises Inc. is getting all of its rabbits in a row.

The company Friday announced the consolidation of its existing online, TV and DVD businesses into a new Playboy Entertainment Group.

Playboy Enterprises senior executive vice president James Griffiths was named president of the new Playboy Entertainment Group

President of programming Ned Nalle and president of distribution Randy Nicolau will report to Griffiths.

Charter, Comcast Feeling the ‘Moxi’

Digeo Inc. Monday announced two major MSO deals for its “Moxi” broadband-media-center platform.

Charter Communications Inc., Motorola Inc. and Digeo announced the commercial launch of the Motorola “Broadband Media Center” powered with Digeo's Moxi in the MSO’s Rochester, Minn., market.

And Comcast and Digeo announced a planned commercial trial of the Motorola BMC with Moxi, but they did not specify the system.

Cox Taps Nuera for Media Gateways

Nuera Communications Inc. said Cox Communications Inc. has signed a multiyear deal to use the company’s media gateway for its voice-over-Internet-protocol rollouts.

Cox has launched VoIP in Roanoke, Va., using Nuera gear, the company said.

MSO president Jim Robbins told analysts Friday that Cox plans to roll out VoIP in three to four markets later this year. As for Roanoke, he added, “It is working very well.”

Adelphia, AT&T Join Forces for VoIP

Adelphia Communications Corp. became the latest MSO to partner with a telephone company for voice-over-Internet-protocol service, landing a deal with AT&T Corp.

In a statement, AT&T said it has signed a marketing agreement with Adelphia for its CallVantage VoIP service for the MSO’s high-speed Internet customers.
