Time Warner Cable chairman and CEO Glenn Britt said Google Fiber, the 1 gigabit per second fiber-optic service launched by the search giant may have some of the glow from its parent, but in the end it isn’t offering anything that the MSO hasn’t successfully competed against for decades.

“What they’re doing is not any different than an overbuilder,” Britt said on a conference call with analysts to discuss first quarter results Thursday. “And we’ve had overbuilders for the last several decades in the business.”

Time Warner Cable kicked off the 2013 cable earnings season with mixed results, growing revenue by 6.6% and cash flow by 2% but losing 119,000 video subscribers as customers left the second largest MSO in the country after promotional-period offers rolled off.

Time Warner Cable reported $5.5 billion in total revenue for the period, up from $5.1 billion in the prior year. Operating income before depreciation and amortization (OIBDA) was $1.9 billion in the period, up from $1.87 billion a year ago.

Cable ONE said it is investing $60 million in infrastructure upgrades that will enhance the speed, reliability, and quality of Internet, cable, and phone service for the majority of customers in the Phoenix-based MSO’s 42 markets.

The project, which  began in 2012 and is scheduled to continue through 2014, includes upgrading nearly 50,000 amplifiers, installing more than 600 new nodes, replacing 800 miles of cable, and adding approximately 600 miles of fiber – all of which will reinforce the company’s infrastructure and enhance service.

Time Warner Cable said Tuesday that it has named former Cox Business Services chief Phil Meeks as executive vice president and chief operating officer for business services, beginning June 3.

In his new role, Meeks will lead TWC’s business services unit, which serves more than 570,000 business customers and accounts for approximately $2 billion in annual revenues and has about 6,000 employees. Meeks will be based in TWC’s corporate office in New York City and will report directly to the company’s president and COO, Rob Marcus.

Google Fiber’s next stop could soon be Provo, Utah, setting up a battle with incumbent broadband ISPs Comcast and CenturyLink.

Google Fiber announced Wednesday it has signed a deal to purchase iProvo, an existing fiber-based network owned by the city, with a promise to upgrade the network to 1 Gig, offer a subscription video service and complete network construction (for free) so every home on the existing iProvo network  can connect to Google Fiber’s services.

Charter Communications has hired Rocky Boler, a longtime cable industry customer service professional, as senior vice president,  customer care. He will oversee all facets of the Charter customer care organization and continue the focus on delivering superior service to Charter customers, the company said. He reports to executive vice president Kip Mayo, who said in a release: “Rocky has had a long tenure in the cable industry and brings both strategic leadership and hands-on experience to his role at Charter.”
