For the third year in a row, Nielsen reported notable increases in the amount of time users streamed video on game consoles. Console users in 2012 spent 22% of their time streaming movies and TV programs, up from 19% in 2011 and 13% in 2010.

Agreement Resolves 2011 Suit Over Interactive Program Guide Patents

Rovi announced Wednesday that it entered into a patent-licensing agreement with Hulu, resolving Rovi's litigation against the Internet TV site.

Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

In July 2011, Rovi sued Hulu in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, alleging the Internet TV site infringed its interactive program guide patents. Rovi also has sued Netflix, Amazon.com and Roku, among others, alleging patent infringement.

Internet Set-Top Maker’s 750-Plus Channels Now Include TWC TV

Roku is launching the third generation of its trademark Internet set-top boxes, with an overhauled user interface, a speedier processor and a 750-plus channel lineup that now includes access to Time Warner Cable’s TWC TV service.

And among other enhancements, the $99.99 Roku 3 includes a remote with a headphone jack for private listening.

The Roku 3’s dual-core ARM-based processor chip from Broadcom is about five times faster than the Roku 2 XS for snappier performance, according to director of product management Lloyd Klarke.

Aereo -- the Internet TV startup that major broadcasters accuse of illegally retransmitting their content -- announced Monday that it has decided to make its service available to 19 million people living in the New York City metropolitan region.

The company also kicked off its first advertising campaign, which shuns TV ads in favor of outdoor advertising including billboards and phone-kiosk posters. Aereo markets itself as an alternative to cable, satellite or telco TV, with the tagline "No Cable Required."

Intel sometime in 2013 expects to debut a broadband-delivered TV service that includes “proper” live television and on-demand content, according to Erik Huggers, corporate vice president and general manager of Intel Media.

The chip giant will compete with incumbent cable, satellite and telco TV services based on features -- not price -- Huggers said, speaking Tuesday at AllThingsD’s "D: Dive Into Media" conference in Dana Point, Calif.

Continuing to wage a battle with Netflix for content rights, Amazon.com announced a content licensing agreement with PBS that will make the online retailer’s Prime Instant Video the exclusive subscription home for streaming the Carnival/Masterpiece co-production Downton Abbey.

Seasons 1 and 2 of the series are currently available on Prime Instant Video, and Amazon said they are the most-watched TV series of all time on the service.
