DirecTV Shut Out of Miami-Tennessee NFL Game

“NFL Sunday Ticket” subscribers will not have live access to Saturday’s rescheduled Tennessee Titans-Miami Dolphins National Football League game.

The out-of-market package, which retails for $209 on DirecTV Inc., offers unlimited coverage of regular-season NFL games. But a DirecTV spokeswoman said the league is not making the Tennessee-Miami game -- which will be played one day earlier than originally scheduled due to Hurricane Ivan, which could hit Florida this weekend -- available nationally.

EchoStar Summit a Sellout

Some 2,200 Dish Network retailers from across the United States will congregate in Dallas May 20-22 for EchoStar Communications Corp.’s 2004 Team Summit.

Highlights of the sold-out conference will include appearances by Jay Leno, Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and Grammy Award-winning country-music star Vince Gill.

The keynote speaker for the confab -- to be held at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas -- will be Sirius Satellite Radio CEO Joseph P. Clayton.

Judge Boots Pegasus’ Claims vs. DirecTV

Pegasus Communications Corp. just can’t win in court against DirecTV Inc.

A federal district court judge Thursday granted DirecTV’s motions to eliminate all remaining claims against it by Pegasus and Golden Sky Systems Inc. in the parties’ four-year-old lawsuit.

This follows an April 14 ruling in which a federal jury awarded DirecTV $51.5 million in damages from Pegasus regarding a lawsuit Pegasus filed against the direct-broadcast satellite giant claiming that DirecTV breached a joint marketing contract.

Dish Goes Local in Tarheel Country

EchoStar Communications Corp.’s Dish Network said Thursday that it will offer local channels via satellite in the Greenville, N.C., area.

Greenville-area Dish customers in 15 counties can now receive CBS channel 9 (WNCT), Fox channel 8 (WFXI), NBC channel 7 (WITN) and PBS channel 19 (WUNM).

Dish now offers local channels in 142 cities and their metro areas, in 50 states and in the District of Columbia.

Norfolk Gets Dish Local Channels

EchoStar Communications Corp.’s Dish Network said Thursday that it will offer local channels via satellite in the Norfolk, Va., area.

Norfolk-area Dish customers in 25 counties can now receive ABC channel 13 (WVEC), CBS channel 3 (WTKR), Fox channel 43 (WVBT), NBC channel 10 (WAVY), PBS channel 15 (WHRO), UPN channel 27 (WGNT) and The WB channel 33 (WTVZ).

Dish now offers local channels in 144 cities and their metro areas, in 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

DirecTV’s Pegasus Buy Is Official

DirecTV Inc.’s acquisition of Pegasus Satellite Television Inc. is a done deal.

A U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge in Portland, Maine, approved the $875 million cash transaction Thursday. The deal was originally announced Aug. 2.

DirecTV said it expects the migration of Pegasus customers to its service to be done in 30-45 days, with no service interruptions.

Hughes Debuts DIRECWAY VPN Accelerator

Hughes Network Systems Inc. introduced a satellite-based virtual-private-network-acceleration technology Tuesday.

The company said its “DIRECWAY VPN Accelerator” will enable “enterprises and government agencies to implement uniformly efficient and secure wide-area broadband networks reaching teleworker employees at any location, urban or rural.”

The Accelerator is based on the IPsec (Internet-protocol-security protocol) standard.

Study: More TVs on DBS than Cable

A new survey found that 79% of TVs in direct-broadcast satellite homes are connected to that digital platform, versus 58% “set” penetration in digital-cable homes.

Horowitz Associates Inc.’s “State of Digital and Interactive Television 2004” also found that digital-cable subscribers pay an average of $16.60 more per month for their service than DBS customers do.

Court OKs DirecTV Latin America Reorg

DirecTV Latin America LLC moved one step closer to emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Friday.

The direct-broadcast satellite operator said the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., has confirmed its plan of reorganization.

DirecTV Latin America said it expects its plan to become effective by the end of this month.

The company’s March 2003 filing only applied to its U.S. entity, and not to any of its operating companies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

EchoStar Communications Corp.’s Dish Network said Thursday that it will offer local channels via satellite in the Charlottesville, Va., area.

Charlottesville area Dish customers in four counties -- Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene and Madison -- can now receive ABC channel 16 (WVAW), CBS channel 19 (WCAV), NBC channel 29 (WVIR) and PBS channel 41 (WHTJ).

Dish now offers local channels in 146 cities and their metro areas, in 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
