FiOS TV Expands Oyster Bay Availability

Verizon Communications is now taking orders for its Verizon FiOS TV service in parts of Town of Oyster Bay hamlets Bethpage, Hicksville, Jericho and Plainview, N.Y.

The regional Bell operating company began taking orders for its video service in parts of Massapequa, Seaford, Syosset and Woodbury June 27.

The Oyster Bay Town Board voted unanimously May 9 to grant Verizon a franchise to provide television services for the town's unincorporated villages.

Tandberg TV Board Backs Ericsson Bid

Tandberg Television’s board of directors unanimously recommended to shareholders that they accept Ericsson’s unsolicited bid worth $1.4 billion — effectively shutting the door on Arris Group’s chances of picking up the video-processing equipment maker.

Ericsson on Feb. 26 offered 106 Norwegian kroner ($17.08) per share of Tandberg, 10% higher than a cash-and-stock bid worth 96 kroner per share ($15.47) from Arris.

IPTV Not Stealing Satellite Customers: Study

Despite almost quadrupling in subscribers in 2007, IPTV services are not stealing customers from satellite television in the Americas region—at least for now, according to iSuppli Corp.


The number of IPTV subscribers in North and South America expanded to 1.8 million in 2007, up 257% from 501,000 in 2006.


The vast majority of those subscribers were in the North American region, specifically in the United States.

Siemens Communications Inc. struck a deal with content-protection specialist Widevine Technologies Inc., making Widevine a certified vendor for its Surpass Home Entertainment” Internet-protocol-TV-delivery system.

Based on a middleware product that oversees content delivery, the Surpass portfolio offers a range of IP-based video and on-demand entertainment elements, including back-office management tools and extensions for combined communications and home entertainment services of the future.
