Verizon's FiOS TV, which in February began charging a $2.42 surcharge for regional sports networks, has introduced a new $9.99 "Sports Pass" add-on tier that includes networks currently available in the most expensive programming package (Ultimate HD) and some services that are slated to be removed from a less-inclusive package (Extreme HD) that Verizon advertises as its most popular.

WatchESPN is now available to AT&T U-verse subscribers, giving the telco’s customers access to the sports programmer’s fare on multiple platforms.

The launch of the streaming platform places ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and broadband service ESPN3 live online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app, and through ESPN on Xbox LIVE to Gold members. The debut comes ahead of the start of the Major League Baseball on Sunday March 31 and golf’s first major, The Masters, next month.

AT&T TV Customers Now Have Online Access to Network’s New Episodes Day After Air

Fox Broadcasting has brought AT&T U-verse into its slowly expanding authentication tent, with the telco’s video subs now able to watch full-length episodes of shows like New Girl and The Simpsons online and on mobile devices the day after they air on TV.

AT&T is the sixth pay TV partner to sign on for Fox’s TV Everywhere service, joining Dish Network, Verizon Communications, Mediacom Communications, Blue Ridge Communications and Cable One.

beIN Sport Launches On Verizon FiOS TV

beIN SPORT said Verizon FiOS TV has added both beIN SPORT HD and beIN SPORT en Español HD to its lineup.

beIN SPORT is or will be on Channel 598 in the FiOS TV Ultimate HD package. The Spanish-language beIN SPORT en Español HD will be available on Channel 1538 in Verizon’s La Conexion and Spanish-language TV packages. The channels are available now to FiOS TV customers in Florida, Texas, California, and Pittsburgh and will be available in all markets by mid-April, the Al Jazeera Sports-owned programmer said.

BT has deployed the video publishing system from Comcast subsidiary thePlatform as the central nervous system for its IPTV services, after the U.K. telco wound down the Microsoft Mediaroom system last year.

The telco is using thePlatform’s MPX cloud-based video publishing system to power both BT Vision, originally launched in December 2006 on the Mediaroom IPTV platform, and the newer YouView from BT, which it introduced last fall.

Verizon Communications’ patent application for a camera-enabled set-top that would serve ads based on which TV viewers were in the room -- and what they were saying or doing -- was officially rejected on March 7.

According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office’s Patent Application Information Retrieval system, Verizon’s application for “Methods and Systems for Presenting an Advertisement Associated with an Ambient Action of a User” received a final rejection last Thursday. The agency cited prior patents in the field for the rejection.
