Rural Broadband Investments, a new player in the cable space backed by private equity group GTCR, made the first of what it hopes are many small cable buys with its deal to acquire New Wave Communications, a rural MSO owned by Pamlico Capital.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but people in the cable financial community said New Wave, with about 90,000 customers in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas, is estimated to be worth about $300 million.

Comcast said Tuesday that it has agreed to buy out General Electric Co.’s 49% interest in the NBCUniversal joint venture for $16.7 billion, giving the cable giant full control of the programming unit.

Comcast had been scheduled to buy the NBCU stake from GE in July 2014.

In addition, Comcast said NBCUniversal will purchase from GE the properties used by the programmer at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan and CNBC’s headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. for approximately $1.4 billion.

Ending minutes of speculation, Charter Communications confirmed it has acquired Cablevision Systems’ Optimum West properties for $1.625 billion.

Optimum West, the former Bresnan Communications, has about 304,000 customers in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Montana.

Charter Communications is close to finalizing a deal for Cablevision Systems’ Optimum West cable systems in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah, sources in the cable financial community confirmed Thursday..

Charter, the fifth largest MSO in the country with about 5 million customers, beat out bids from Time Warner Cable, Suddenlink Communications and private equity group TPG Partners. Optimum West has about 300,000 subscribers.

British cable giant Virgin Media confirmed that it is in discussions with John Malone’s Liberty Global concerning a possible takeover, which could further solidify Liberty’s dominance in the European cable landscape.

“Virgin Media confirms that it is in discussions with Liberty Global, Inc., a leading international cable company, concerning a possible transaction,” Virgin Media said in a terse statement Tuesday. “Any such transaction would be subject to regulatory and other conditions. A further announcement will be made in due course.”

Deal Combines Two Industry Pioneers

Service Electric Cablevision has agreed to purchase Shen-Heights TV Association in a transaction that combines two of the oldest continuously operating cable systems in the country.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed but Service Electric senior vice president Mark Walter said the deal has closed and Shen-Heights represents a nice fit with the company’s Hazelton, Pa. system.
