nCUBE Launches on Charter in Long Beach

nCUBE Corp. said Charter Communications Inc. has selected its digital-advertising system for deployment in Long Beach, Calif.

Long Beach is Charter's testbed for an all-digital network. The MSO distributes its video signals across a hybrid all-digital and analog/digital network. nCUBE has had video-on-demand servers in the market since 2001.

nCUBE said its server can provide a bridge for operators moving from analog to digital, handling digital ad insertion for networks that formerly were delivered in analog.

BET Awards Notches Viewership Record

Black Entertainment Television's June 22 BET Awards ‘04 show set an all-time viewership record for the African-American targeted network.

The live, three-hour show -- which aired without a video delay and featured performances from Janet Jackson, the Isley Brothers and Outkast -- drew a record 5.6 million viewers, besting the 5.5 million garnered by the June 2003 BET Awards show.

Overall, the show posted a 4.61 household rating, network executives said.

Universal Cable Is Seeing Gold

NBC Universal Cable networks carrying Olympic Games coverage are thus far returning viewership performances worthy of gold medals, NBC officials said.

Through Aug. 18, USA Network, CNBC, Bravo and MSNBC were averaging a combined 42 million unduplicated viewers since each began televising Olympic coverage from Athens, Greece, Aug. 14, according to Nielsen Media Research figures released by NBC Sports.

Nielsen: ‘LPM’ a Go in L.A., Chicago, S.F.

Despite the ongoing controversy and protests, Nielsen Media Research plans to not only proceed with its controversial launch of “Local People Meters” Thursday in Los Angeles, but to also roll them out Aug. 5 in Chicago and Sept. 30 in San Francisco, officials said Wednesday.

As it has done in New York, Nielsen will continue to operate the old “Meter/Diary” system along with the LPMs for a set period of time, as a transition period, to allow clients to adjust to the new system.

NBC to Air Sci Fi Series

NBC is scaring up a little repurposing and promotion for Sci Fi Channel on Halloween Eve.

The Peacock network’s primetime Oct. 30 will be dressed up as “Sci Fi Saturday,” a programming ploy that will give broadcast viewers a look at the cable network’s hidden-camera reality series, Scare Tactics, hosted by Stephen Baldwin, and docu-soap Ghost Hunters, which follows a group of real-life ghostbusters who investigate hauntings.

Fox News Tops VP-Debate Ratings

Fox News Channel drew the largest audience among cable news channels, 7.8 million viewers, for the vice-presidential debate Tuesday.

Fox News was ahead of Cable News Network’s 3.3 million viewers and MSNBC’s 1.5 million from 9 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Nielsen Media Research data supplied Wednesday by Fox.

NBC drew the most viewers for the debate, with 11.5 million, with ABC tallying 10.3 million, CBS doing 9.2 million and PBS drawing 3.3 million.

Nielsen’s ‘LPMs’ Have Jackson’s Support

In a big boost for Nielsen Media Research, the Rev. Jesse Jackson has given his endorsement to controversial “Local People Meters,” which have come under attack from African-American and Hispanic groups alike.

Jackson, founder and president of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, in a letter to his membership released Tuesday, put his imprimatur on Nielsen’s LPMs, which have rolled out in several cities, including New York and Los Angeles.

Pegasus Counters DirecTV/NRTC with Chapter 11

Pegasus Communications Corp. said Thursday that its subsidiaries have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The company’s move was a response to Wednesday’s announcement that the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative no longer has the exclusive rights to distribute DirecTV Inc.’s direct-broadcast satellite service in its territories, which terminated Pegasus’ exclusive agreements, as well.

SeaChange Names China VP

SeaChange International Inc. has named Zheng Gao vice president and general manager of Greater China operations.

The vendor’s systems and software comprise the on-air and video-streaming platforms for 30-plus television companies in China, including multichannel broadcasters CCTV, Beijing TV and Guangdong TV.

Cable operators Guangdong Cable TV, Hefei Cable, Sichuan Cable and others run video-on-demand, pay-per-view and advertising-insertion businesses with SeaChange VOD systems and spot systems.
