TNT Squeaks Out Weekly Ratings Win

Turner Network Television eased past TBS and Disney Channel to win last week’s primetime ratings race.

The drama network averaged a 2.1 household rating mark June 7-13, according to an ABC Cable Networks Group analysis of Nielsen Media Research data, just ahead of the 2.0 marks posted by sister network TBS and kids’ and teen service Disney.

USA Network ranked fourth with a 1.9, while Nickelodeon was fifth at a 1.8.

Charley Trackers Watched Fox News

Fox News Channel was crowing Tuesday about how many people watched its Hurricane Charley coverage.

Fox News said that on Friday, Aug. 13, it averaged 1.012 million total-day viewers, compared with 642,000 for rival Cable News Network.

On Saturday, Fox News (1.064 million total-day viewers) beat CNN (942,000) and The Weather Channel (844,000), the network added.

Originals Boost USA in Primetime

Original fare, headed by the finale of limited series The 4400, abducted more viewers for USA Network in primetime than any other service in basic cable last week.

NBC Universal Cable’s general-entertainment service averaged a 2.4 household rating and some 2.13 million households Aug. 2-8, according to a Disney ABC Cable Networks Group analysis of Nielsen Media Research data.

Targeted-Ad Firm Completes $12M Financing Round

Invidi Technologies Corp., which has developed targeted-advertising technology that it’s pitching to cable operators, said it has completed a $12 million round of series-A financing.

Menlo Ventures of Menlo Park, Calif., and EnerTech Capital of Wayne Pa., led the round, which will enable the commercialization of “Advatar,” Invidi’s digital-set-top targeted-advertising-software technology. Business Development Bank of Canada also participated.

Sopranos Deliver for HBO

Home Box Office's mob series, The Sopranos, whacked the broadcast-network competition during its fifth-season finale episode Sunday.

The series drew 10.98 million viewers during the 9 p.m.-10 p.m. time period, besting the 10.91 by ABC's game-one coverage of the NBA Finals between the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Lakers on the East Coast, HBO officials said. HBO's airing of The Sopranos on the West Coast did not go head-to-head with the game.

Judge: ‘LPMs’ Can Roll Into L.A.

A judge Thursday rejected Univision Communications Inc.’s bid to block Nielsen Media Research from introducing “Local People Meter” TV-measurement technology in the Los Angeles market July 8.

State Superior Court Judge J. Stephen Czuleger, in a ruling issued orally from the bench, said arguments that Univision would be damaged by the rollout were speculative and he was greatly troubled by the First Amendment implications of the requested injunction against Nielsen.

TNT’s Grid Makes Ratings Bid

The Grid, Turner Network Television’s much-ballyhooed limited series, uncovered plenty of viewers in its initial outing, notching a 3.6 household rating during its July 19 premiere from 9 p.m.-11 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research data.

All told, The Grid found some 4.33 million viewers in the process.

CNN Tops in Cable DNC Ratings

Cable News Network put up some solid Nielsen numbers with its first night of coverage from the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

The network outdelivered rival Fox News Channel in total viewers and among adults 25-54 in primetime. From 8 p.m.-11 p.m. Monday, CNN was watched on average by more than 2 million viewers, versus 1.64 million for Fox News and 1.14 million for MSNBC, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

Viewers Pass Through Sci Fi’s Stargate

The two-part opener of season eight of Sci Fi Channel’s Stargate SG-1 was a record-setter.

The network said Friday’s "New Order" episode earned a 2.4 Nielsen Media Research rating and was seen by 3.224 million viewers two and older, making it the most watched episode in the series’ history.

Viacom Blitzed for Not Running Ad

A coalition of Democratic-leaning groups has launched a protest against Viacom Inc. -- including a raft of phone calls channeled directly to chairman Sumner Redstone’s office -- because the media giant’s network, Comedy Central, is refusing to run its ad.
