Scripps Network Interactive reported lower earnings as a revenue increase was canceled out by higher expenses and an adverse tax charge.

First-quarter net income was $108 million, or $0.72 per share, compared with $115 million, or $0.73 per diluted share, in the first quarter 2012.

The 2013 earnings include a $7.8 million tax adjustment that reduced earnings by 5 cents a share.

Revenues were up 11% to $594 million.

Time Warner reported a big gain in earnings, despite lower ad revenue at its cable network unit.

First-quarter net income was $729 million, or 77 cents a share, up 25% from $583 million, or 60 cents a share, a year ago.

Revenues were $6.9 billion, flat from a year ago.

Appearing in the kind of video that often opens the CBS Television Network’s upfront, Moonves shot down several of Lanzone’s ideas. Don’t’ sing. Don’t try to do the Harlem Shake. Don’t use too many initials. Don’t try to be too smart.

“This isn’t the real upfront,” Moonves said. “These are dramatically different budgets.”

NBC Sports Group has selected Civic Entertainment Group to develop experiential marketing campaigns, facing off with a promotion around the programmer’s coverage of the 2013 National Hockey League Playoffs.

The relationship with Civic Entertainment Group, which was recently purchased by Seacrest Global Group, the investment arm of Seacrest's media holdings, will extend through NBC Olympics’ presentation of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
