Actress/singer Jennifer Lopez and film producer Robert Rodriguez pitched their respective Latino-targeted, English-language networks to the cable industry during separate events Wednesday morning during the 2013 Cable Show.

Lopez spoke about her role as chief creative officer of NuvoTv during the show’s opening session, saying the network will be targeted to modern Latinos looking for content that represents their lives. While there are more Latinos on TV today, Lopez said that the characters don’t necessarily reflect today’s Latino population.

Comedian To Host Two July Stand-Up Shows

Comedian Wanda Sykes will host two summer comedy specials for OWN.

The two-hour original comedy specials, Wanda Sykes Presents Herlarious will air on consecutive Saturdays beginning July 13 and will feature emerging female stand-up comedians including Andi Smith, Gloria Bigelow, Marina Franklin, Tracey Ashley, Carmen Lynch and Dominique Witten, said network executives.

Sykes will produce and host the series, which will tape in front of a live audience at Harpo Studios in Chicago, said network officials.

Telemundo said its Tuesday night telecast of Mexico’s important 1-0 win over Jamaica in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying match was the top sporting event on television that night regardless of language.

The NBCUniversal-owned Spanish-language broadcaster claimed an average of nearly 2.9 million total viewers and more than 1.7 million viewers ages 18-49, citing Nielsen Live Plus Same Day data. On a cumulative basis, the Rumbo al Mundial match reached more than 5.7 million viewers, including about 3.38 million in the 18-49 demo, Telemundo said.

Pay-per-view boxing champion Floyd Mayweather will fight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in a Sept. 14 blockbuster event. 

Mayweather, the undefeated welterweight champion and the PPV boxing category’s biggest draw, tweeted Wednesday night that he will fight the Mexican junior middleweight champion at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, according to ESPN.com.

OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network's first scripted series produced by Tyler Perry yielded record-setting ratings for the network last night.

The May 28 premiere of drama series The Haves and the Have Nots drew 1.7 million viewers, the highest rated series debut in network history, outperforming the 1.2 million viewers generated by reality series Life With La Toya this past April.

A second episode of the series at 10 p.m. drew 1.8 million viewers, said network officials.

Asian-American targeted network Myx TV will make its content available on the Roku digital media receivers, the network announced Monday.

The network has teamed with content distribution company adRise to make its programming available to more than five million Roku owners. The Myx TV app is currently available through the Roku Channel Store beginning today.
