Refreshed, Personalized Release of MSO's Cloud-Based Interface to Debut This Fall

Washington -- Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts presented the MSO's “future of television,” and its name is X2.

Offering a sneak peak of the MSO’s new cloud-based interface for set-tops, tablets, smartphones and other connected devices, Roberts showed off a system that teems with recommendation and personalization features as well as a voice-based search capability that will be baked into a new remote control.

The new interface is a revamped version of the currently deployed X1 platform. X2, Roberts said, will be deployed sometime this fall.

Japanese wireless giant SoftBank raised its bid for Sprint Nextel to $21.6 billion, a deal that could put more cash in Sprint shareholders hands.

According to its latest proposal on June 10, SoftBank would pay $7.65 per share for Sprint, up from the $7.30 per share it originally offered.

Softbank will continue to invest $1.9 billion in New Sprint at closing, which in addition to the $3.1 billion convertible debt investment made by SoftBank in October 2012, brings SoftBank’s total investment in Sprint to $5.0 billion.

Washington — Cable operators said the emerging DOCSIS 3.1 specifications will save them time and money by leveraging their existing upstream spectrum and avoiding more costly bandwidth-enhancing alternatives. 

DOCSIS 3.1 and its use of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) “is a godsend in the upstream,” Comcast executive vice president and chief technology officer Tony Werner said Monday during a Cable Show panel that covered a broad range of technology topics.

Washington -- TiVo has launched a mobile and second screen companion app system for cable operators, a move that will allow operators to offer TiVo's second screen experience even in homes that don't have TiVo devices.

As part of the launch at The Cable Show 2013 on June 10th, TiVo also announced that Atlantic Broadband, who recently signed with TiVo, will be the first U.S. cable operator to offer the mobile companion app to its subscribers.
