Comcast Monday kicked off the second year of its Internet Essentials braodband adoption program at an event at Kramer Middle School in Washington.
That comes a year after the company launched the program in the city at an event at Ballout High School. Internet Essentials is Comcast's program to provide low-cost ($9.95 a month) broadband to homes with students eligible for free and low-cost school lunch programs for as long as the children are in the home, as well as training and access to reduced-price computers .

President Barack Obama Tuesday announced his intention to nominate Dr. Joshua Wright to be a member of the Federal Trade Commission.

Wright, a Republican, is currently a professor at George Mason University School of Law. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Wright, who served as the inaugural scholar in residence at the FTC's competition bureau in 2007-2008.

Wright's resume also includes teaching public policy at Pepperdine and a clerkship for California U.S. District court Judge James Selna.

Reps. Joe Barton (R-Tex.) and Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), the ranking members of the Energy & Commerce Committee and Communications Subcommittee, respectively, have called on the Federal Communications Commission not to allow states to collect universal service fees from voice over Internet prototol (VoIP) providers.
That came in comments from the pair of legislators on a petition to the FCC from Nebraska and Kansas utility commissions for a declaratory ruling to that effect.
