Fuse Launching On-Demand Service

Continuing to take advantage of interactive technology, music-video channel Fuse will launch an on-demand service featuring the latest in music videos and related programming.

The network next month will also debut a daily music-countdown show that will allow viewers to download songs featured during the telecast, according to president Marc Juris.

Level 3 Expands VoIP Service

Level 3 Communications Inc. said it is expanding its voice-over-Internet-protocol local inbound service from 73 U.S. markets to more than 300 by the end of June.

The company said its service reduces communications costs for foreign carriers, call-center operators, conferencing providers and service providers, including cable operators. It uses Level 3's “Voice Termination” service and “VoIP Toll Free” calling products.

Harmonic Introduces New Gear

Harmonic Inc. introduced its “GIGALight GTA 9100” digital dense-wave-division-multiplexing transmission system at a cable show in Germany.

The technology can transmit up to 40 wavelengths per fiber, with each wavelength delivering throughput of 10 gigabits per second.

The equipment can be integrated with existing Harmonic equipment, the company said. The new gear can transport 120,000 VOD streams, the vendor added.

Terayon Gets More ‘FLEXable’

Terayon Communication Systems Inc. said Monday that it has added functionality to its “Terayon FLEXable Plant Solution.”

The vendor described FLEXable Plant as “a carrier-class approach that delivers throughput increases of up to three times existing network results by significantly boosting modem capability without requiring expensive plant upgrades.”

SBC to Take On Cable with $6B Upgrade

SBC Communications Inc. said it will invest $6 billion in an upgrade to take on the cable industry, AP reported.

The San Antonio-based regional Bell operating company said it will replace copper wiring with fiber optics in neighborhoods across its 13-state local-service territory, which will also enable it to offer faster high-speed-data connections, voice over Internet protocol and other premium products, according to AP.

Fried Rice in Enron Broadband Case

Former Enron Broadband Services CEO Kenneth Rice pleaded guilty to securities fraud Friday, AP reported.

Rice also agreed to help federal prosecutors with other Enron-related cases, according to AP.

He was charged in May 2003 with selling 1.2 million shares of Enron Corp. stock for more than $76 million while he knew the bankrupt energy giant’s broadband unit was failing.

CableServ Serving Major MSO

CableServ Inc. said Monday that one of North America’s largest MSOs will use its "Amplifier Upgrades" products to upgrade 10,000 miles of its bandwidth from 750 megahertz to 860 MHz.

The vendor -- which has upgraded thousands of miles of plant throughout North America for MSOs including Rogers Cable Inc., Adelphia Communications Corp., Comcast Corp., Charter Communications Inc., Mediacom Communications Corp. and Cox Communications Inc. -- would not name the MSO.

TiVo Announces 140-Hour DVR

TiVo Inc. is introducing a 140-hour digital-video recorder, its "Series 2," which will carry a suggested retail price of $399.

Consumers who buy the DVR before May will receive $50 mail-in rebates.

C-COR.net Buys Stargus

Weeks after buying Alopa Networks Inc., C-COR.net Corp. scooped up another company, agreeing to purchase Stargus Inc. for $17 million in cash.

Stargus provides network optimization, subscriber-usage reporting and capacity planning for cable MSOs.

C-COR plans to integrate the Stargus operation into its broadband-management-solutions division, and it expects the deal to add $8 million in revenue next year.

Amphenol Holders Launch Secondary Offering

Amphenol Corp. said Tuesday that some of its shareholders began a secondary offering of 8 million shares of class-A common stock in the company.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. affiliates are offering 7.56 million of the shares, with the remainder being offered by Amphenol management.
