BCI Broadband, a new player on the cable systems scene headed by two former Bresnan Communications executives, has agreed to purchase small market MSO Allegiance Communications in a deal the company says could be the first in an aggressive growth plan.

BCI is headed by former Bresnan president Jeff DeMond and former Bresnan chief financial officer Andrew Kober. BCI is backed by BBH Capital Partners, the private equity division of investment bank Brown Bros. Harriman.

New York-- While TV viewers will get a gander at high-resolution Super Bowl XLVII images via CBS’s new camera system, online users can play director on their own as they watch the NFL championship.
Speaking at CBS Super Media Day here on Jan. 8, when the company outlined its cross-divisional plan to bring maximum exposure for the Big Game across myriad platforms, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus noted the network will deploy the hyper zoom camera system for its coverage of Super Bowl XLVII from New Orleans on Feb. 3.

Las Vegas -- Broadcom is unveiling its first gigabit-speed DOCSIS 3.0 integrated circuit and also is introducing what it claims is the world’s first Ultra HD TV video decoder chip, even though Ultra HD televisions today are pricey and years away from mass-market adoption.

Broadcom’s fourth-generation DOCSIS 3.0 system-on-a-chip solution, the BCM3384, provides the ability to perform channel bonding across up to 24 downstream channels (for throughput speeds up to 960 Megabits per second in North American cable systems) and eight upstream channels (for up to 240 Mbps).

CableLabs has certified Netgear’s CG4500TM Voice/Data Gateway -- capable of delivering nearly 1 Gigabit per second downstream -- for the DOCSIS 3.0 specification.

The unit can perform 24-by-4 channel bonding (24 channels down, four up), to deliver a maximum of 960 Megabits per second downstream and 120 Mbps upstream. The gateway is based on Intel’s Puma 6 DOCSIS 3.0 chip set and includes MaxLinear's MxL267 Full Spectrum Capture front-end receivers.

The FCC has tapped 14 telecoms for a pilot broadband adoption program using savings from its reform of the Lifeline program.

The reform of the Lifeline phone subsidy program yielded $214 million in 2012, the FCC announced, $14 million over its projection of $200 million. It was part of a broader FCC effort to both reform that program and migrate that and other phone subsidies to broadband.
