HBO has elevated Otto Berkes, one of the original creators of Microsoft’s Xbox game platform, to the position of chief technology officer to take over the reins from longtime CTO Bob Zitter, who is stepping down from the post in March 2013.

As CTO and executive vice president of technology, Berkes will be responsible for overseeing all technology efforts worldwide, including consumer technology, distribution, origination, production operations, engineering and IT.

Samsung Venture Investment, the venture-capital arm of the Samsung Group, has taken a $5 million stake in Delivery Agent, which provides multiplatform commerce services for TV and entertainment clients.

Delivery Agent said it will use the funding to expand the deployment of commerce applications across connected devices, including Internet-connected TVs and mobile.

Comcast’s RDK is a pre-integrated software bundle for powering tru2way, IP or hybrid set-top boxes and video gateway devices. The initiative is intended to speed up the development and deployment of next-generation video services such as cloud-based functionality and enhanced guides.

Sony Electronics struck a multiyear pact to embed Ensequence's interactive TV platform software on all of its Internet connected TVs, with Ensequence planning to sell the ITV capabilities to programmers and advertisers.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Beginning in the first quarter of 2013, all new Sony TVs will ship with Ensequence’s ITV platform software. In addition, the software will be available for Sony’s 2011-12 models of connected TVs through software updates.

Set-Top and Home Networking Silicon Maker Lays Off 40 Employees

Entropic Communications laid off 40 employees, or about 6% of its workforce, as the vendor of set-top and home networking silicon said it looks to “rebalance its operations” following a pair of acquisitions earlier this year.

The company, in a regulatory filing Monday, said the layoffs are "an attempt to leverage synergies from its acquisitions, optimize resources around the projects and customers that drive the maximum growth of its businesses, and meet its financial objectives."
