Tenth-Biggest U.S. MSO Latest Operator to Ink Pact for DVRs, Multiscreen Video

TiVo has landed yet another cable operator customer, signing a deal with Cable One to provide DVR software and multiscreen-video applications to the 10th-largest MSO in the U.S.

Cable One, owned by the Washington Post Co., plans to begin rolling out its TiVo offering in the first half of 2013. The MSO has about 600,000 video customers across 19 states.

With the Cable One deal, TiVo has secured deals or partnerships with 10 of the top 20 U.S. cable operators.

Verizon Communications is making 75 live networks available through its updated app for iPad tablets for FiOS TV and Internet customers -- but unlike services from some of its cable competitors, the telco’s tablet TV lineup currently lacks local channels.

The telco originally demonstrated live TV networks streaming to an iPad in mid-2010 and expected to roll out the capability in 2011.

Harmonic Also Hires Ex-Cisco Exec Ventura as VP of Channels

Harmonic announced that Larry Kaplan -- the founding CEO of Omneon, the video-production and playout equipment vendor Harmonic acquired in 2010 -- is stepping down from day-to-day operations as of the end of November.

In addition, Harmonic announced that it has hired Lauren Ventura, who previously worked at Cisco Systems, Bain Capital and Boston Consulting Group, as vice president of channels.

The Consumer Electronics Association named Dish Network’s AutoHop ad-skipping feature -- the subject of ongoing copyright-infringement litigation by major TV broadcasters -- an International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Award Honoree.

The AutoHop feature lets users choose to automatically zap through commercial pods in DVR recordings of primetime TV shows on the four big broadcast networks. It’s available with Dish’s Hopper Whole Home HD DVR, introduced at the 2012 International CES.

Virgin Media, the U.K.’s No. 1 cable operator, has launched “Virgin TV Anywhere,” which lets customers with TiVo DVR service access up to 45 live TV channels and schedule DVR recordings via mobile devices and computers.

In addition, the service lets customers access more than 4,000 hours of video-on-demand from any broadband or Wi-Fi connection. The Virgin TV Anywhere service does not provide access to a customer’s TiVo DVR recordings remotely.

Consumers using Internet-connected TV sets from some 20 manufacturers will soon be able to stream video content -- including both legal and illegal material -- downloaded via embedded BitTorrent software, with the click of a remote.

BitTorrent has reached deals with 20 consumer-electronics manufacturers, according to CEO Eric Klinker. He declined to identify them.

Most of BitTorrent’s deals are for TV models that will launch -- as early as this holiday season -- in Europe and Asia, Klinker said.
