Brightcove, a provider of online video management services, said Wednesday it will discontinue its App Cloud platform designed to provide a “write once, deploy many” capability for video providers to publish apps across different device platforms.

Instead, the company said it will “accelerate investment” in its native player software development kits.

TiVo’s revenue from cable operator customers increased by 83% for the quarter that ended Jan. 31, 2013 -- although the $8.2 million in subscription revenue generated from MSOs in the period represented just 9% of its total sales, and the company posted a net loss.

The DVR company added 222,000 net new customers through cable partners during the period, its fourth quarter of fiscal 2013, to reach 2.12 million. It lost 13,000 TiVo-owned subs to stand at 1.03 million.

TiVo’s research unit is offering what it claims it is the largest data set in the industry for analyzing what consumers watch on TV and see on the Internet, with a sample of more than 100,000 households that uses online data supplied by Experian.

The TiVo Research and Analytics subsidiary’s TRA Cross Media Measurement service also cross-references TV and Internet media exposure data with consumer purchase data.

Company Will Convert Several SD Transponders to DVB-S2, Freeing Up Space for More HD

Comcast’s HITS, which provides satellite video distribution to independent operators, announced an upgrade to its HITS Quantum technology platform that will enable it to add more MPEG-2 HD services later in 2013.

The upgrade project, known as “Q2,” includes converting several HITS standard-definition transponders to DVB-S2 technology. That will increase the number of HD services offered in MPEG 2, and deliver the entire programming lineup via a single satellite.

LG Electronics has acquired Hewlett-Packard’s webOS operating system -- originally developed by Palm as a rival to Apple's iOS -- which LG plans to use to support its next-generation smart TVs as well as a range of other consumer-electronics devices, the companies announced today.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. HP and LG said they do not expect the transaction to have a material impact on either company's financial statements.

Motorola Mobility, whose Home division is in the process of being acquired by Arris Group, has licensed ActiveVideo Networks’ CloudTV HTML5-based interactive TV software to render advanced user interfaces on even low-end set-tops.

ActiveVideo also has a licensing pact with Cisco Systems, which has offered the CloudTV software under its Videoscape brand as a way to let service providers deliver new features and applications to legacy set-top boxes.

Verizon Communications has stocked the TV Everywhere buffet for FiOS TV subs with content from 11 NBCUniversal networks, under a pact the companies signed last fall.

The NBCU programming, available through the telco’s My Verizon portal, includes shows from Bravo, USA, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC, NBC News, NBC, Syfy, mun2, Telemundo and Cozi TV. In addition, FiOS TV customers can access a live simulcast of CNBC.

Next month, Verizon expects to “launch a few more NBCU networks,” according to spokeswoman Heather Wilner.
