Site Acquires Startup That Analyzes TV-Related Social Media Data

Twitter announced late Tuesday that it had acquired Bluefin Labs, a startup that analyzes social media activity related to TV and sells that data to advertisers, agencies and TV networks including CBS, Turner Broadcasting System, Fox and Discovery Communications.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Privately held Twitter is paying between $90 million and $100 million for Bluefin, according to multiple reports.

GetGlue CEO Iskold Says Company Has Decided to Not Merge With Second-Screen Startup Viggle

Two months after second-screen app startup Viggle announced plans to buy GetGlue for $25 million plus stock, GetGlue has decided to call it off, CEO Alex Iskold wrote in a blog post Sunday.

“Today we’ve decided that GetGlue will not be merging with Viggle. The two companies remain friendly and think highly of each other,” Iskold wrote. “We are moving forward as an independent company, and all of us at GetGlue are excited about growing our social network and the leadership position on the second screen.”

Las Vegas -- Cox Communications heralded its forthcoming personalized, interactive app for mobile devices that lets subscribers watch video and control their viewing in new ways as an industry game-changer -- although initially the app will not deliver the full TV lineup.

Cox announced the next-generation mobile app, developed with Cisco Systems and NDS (now part of Cisco), at a press conference Monday at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel.

Las Vegas -- Dish Network is introducing a version of its Hopper multiroom DVR that integrates Slingbox place-shifting technology -- to let customers watch live or recorded TV over the Internet -- and also is launching an app to “sideload” DVR content to an iPad for offline viewing.

Pricing and availability for Hopper with Sling will be announced later in January, the company said. The product and related apps will be available in the "next few weeks," Dish vice president of product management Vivek Khemka said.

AT&T is launching U-verse Screen Pack, a $5 monthly subscription video-on-demand for watching unlimited movies on TV and other devices, aiming to provide an alternative to Netflix, Redbox Instant by Verizon and other over-the-top video services.

Free 'Dish Explorer' App Acts as Remote Control for Multiroom DVR System

Las Vegas -- Dish Network is releasing an iPad app that will let customers with the Hopper multiroom DVR use the tablet as a remote control as well as discover popular and recommended programs and chat about them on social networks.

The free Dish Explorer app will be available in Apple’s App Store on Jan. 7, the operator announced Sunday. Dish is scheduled to hold a press conference on Monday with CEO Joe Clayton here at the 2013 International CES.
