Looking to boost its social status, AT&T has launched an interactive app for U-verse TV customers to tap into their Facebook accounts on the TV.

Other pay TV providers that have hooked up with Facebook include Verizon Communications, which added a widget for FiOS TV customers to access the social-media service three years ago.

Facebook on U-verse TVWith the Facebook app on U-verse TV, subscribers can view their newsfeed, friends list and photos; post status updates and share information about the TV shows they're watching; and interact with friends and view their timelines, photos and status updates.

U-verse TV customers can add up to 10 different Facebook accounts on a single set-top. To access Facebook on TV, customers will need an existing Facebook account and a U-verse High-Speed Internet account.

"This app gives U-verse TV and High Speed Internet customers the ability to share information about what they're watching on their TV with their remote, on any U-verse TV screen," Maria Dillard, vice president of U-verse and video products for AT&T Home Solutions, said in a statement. "It's another example of how we continue to enhance and bring more value to the U-verse experience."

As of June 2012, Facebook had 955 million monthly active users worldwide. AT&T reported 4.15 million U-verse TV subscribers as of June 30.
