Talkback
Wideband Needs A Wide Berth
“Comcast is announcing 50 Mbps capacity. They’ve got one piece right, but still fall short on the other major factor — congestion.
Two major issues in service provider networking: one, raw capacity; and two, congestion management. Comcast is halfway there. I see no plans for congestion management.
I would love to know how Comcast will deploy better congestion management technology. In addition they need to really understand the “locality” issue. Anything that is offered to the market that enables locality will be a winner. Why? Because capacity planning forecasts don’t work in this day and age when you are seeing more upstream traffic being sucked up by [peer-to-peer file sharing].
Past models for network planning are out of date. In the old days (back in the day) it was easy take the number of subscribers and divide by the amount of capacity. It was easy when dealing with just human-usage factors. Now, it’s harder because in addition to human factors there are machine factors. Machine to machine communications throws the network planning equation out of whack.”

Fan Heartened by 'Runway’ Legal Mess
“I’m kinda thrilled about the latest Project Runway news which, incidentally, has nothing to do with designers or clothing. According to Reuters, the lawsuit regarding the PR move to Lifetime continues which will delay the production of further seasons. If NBC wins, it sounds like PR will stay on Bravo.
It just seems right.
And the Weinstein’s will lose. And that’s always a good day for the little guy.
What shocked me was that the Weinstein’s deal with Lifetime was for five more seasons. Given the current state of things, what do you suppose that would actually look like?
Again: A Big Hot Mess.”
