Bresnan Announces Layoffs in Montana

Bresnan Communications said it plans to lay off 46 of its 50 employees in Helena, Mont., by year-end, AP reported.

The MSO is in the process of eliminating 25 of its 27 service-call locations. Offices in the Montana cities of Butte, Great Falls, Kalispell and Missoula will also each lose a few jobs, although not as many as Helena, AP reported.

Helena employees will be able to apply for work at an operations center in Billings, Mont., that is expected to employ 300 workers when it is fully functional in January, AP added.

"It was a very difficult decision because we do realize that it affects real people and their families," Steve Brookstein, vice president of operations in Bresnan's Purchase, N.Y., headquarters, told AP.

“At the same time, we have to think of the well being of all 800 families we employ as far as staying competitive in the telecommunications arena,” he added.

Bresnan bought AT&T Broadband's cable systems in Montana, Colorado and Wyoming in 2002, and it serves 314,000 subscribers in those states and Utah.
