Motorola Broadband Communications Sector posted a 31% increase in third-quarter revenue, reaching $589 million, helping the segment to turn last year's $4 million quarterly loss into a $34 million profit.
Overall, the company posted third-quarter sales of $8.6 billion, up 26% over last year's $6.8 billion. Net earnings reached $479 million, a 313% jump over last year's $116 million.
Motorola executives attributed the broadband-revenue jump to increased digital-video-recorder sales. The company also announced that it was providing consulting services to Comcast for voice-over-Internet-protocol rollouts in several markets.
Motorola said it shipped 400,000 HDTV set-tops in the quarter, including just under 200,000 HD-DVR boxes. In the first nine months of 2004, the company said it shipped 1.9 million HD set-tops, with 500,000 of those including DVRs.
The company said it shipped more than 2 million cable modems in the quarter, with 200,000 of those equipped with VoIP capability.
