Cable-Tec Expo: TWC Homes In On Motorola's EDGE Manager

Time Warner Cable is rolling out Motorola Mobility’s EDGE Manager platform for managing in-home devices across its U.S. footprint, marking the product’s first nationwide deployment from a tier-one MSO.

Motorola EDGE Manager lets operators monitor and manage a range of in-home equipment -- including that from Motorola as well as third-party modems, gateways, set-tops and mobile devices -- for both traditional QAM and IP-based services. The product is designed to identify and address issues before they affect consumers.

“We chose Motorola EDGE to make the connected-home experience as seamless as possible for our subscribers,” Howard Pfeffer, TWC’s senior vice president of broadband engineering and technology, said in a statement. “Motorola EDGE gives us the capabilities we need to provide our subscribers with the best possible experience on all of their screens.”

Worldwide, operators are using Motorola EDGE Manager to manage more than 20 million devices. The product supports multiple protocols, including the Broadband Forum’s TR-069, SNMP, OMA-DM, Microsoft Mediaroom, Motorola Aloha, Telnet and HTTP communications protocols.

Also at Cable-Tec Expo, Motorola launched the GT-3 transcoder, which can process 3 billion pixels of video content per second (the equivalent to nearly 50 full-resolution HD programs) in a one-rack-unit system. On the customer-premises equipment side, the vendor introduced the SBG6782 Advanced Wi-Fi Gateway, available with MoCA, either 3X3 or 2X2 MIMO antenna, and dual 2.4/5-GHz radios.

In addition, Motorola last week said cable operator Cablevision México is the first MSO to successfully deploy Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (S-CDMA) technology, aimed at improving the efficiency of upstream DOCSIS data transmission, on the BSR 64000 cable-modem termination system. Norwood Light Broadband in Norwood, Mass., is in the final stages of testing S-CDMA.

“DOCSIS S-CDMA is one of the best kept secrets in the myriad of DOCSIS 2.0 and 3.0 features and applications,” Israel Madiedo Luna, CTO - telecom of Cablevision México, said in a statement. “People are naturally consuming more bandwidth as new devices, such as smartphones and tablets, continue to proliferate. Motorola’s SCDMA solution enables us to address the growing strain these connected devices, cloud-based services and Internet traffic place on the return path.”
