Comcast Boots Up DOCSIS 3.1 in Boston

Comcast kept its foot on the gas with respect to DOCSIS 3.1 by announcing the introduction of a new 1-Gig (downstream) service in Boston, and plans to deploy it “soon” in several other Comcast markets in the northeast.

Others on deck to get the D3.1-based offering in the coming weeks include Comcast’s hometown of Philadelphia, as well as Washington, DC; Baltimore; Charlottesville, Va.; and Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pa. Additional areas in the region will be getting the service this fall, Comcast said.

In those markets, Comcast’s regular price for residential 1-Gig is $104.95 a month, without a term contract, alongside a promotional price of $79.99 a month if subs agree to a 12-month contract.

Comcast has recently introduced DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit internet service in several of its systems, including all of Colorado and Oregon; Kansas City; Houston; Seattle, southwest Washington, San Francisco and most of the Bay Area in California.

Comcast has also rolled out “Gigabit Pro,” a more expensive symmetrical 2 Gbps service that uses fiber-to-the-premises technologies, in most of the MSO’s markets.
