Cox Communications Inc. will carry the digital signals of public-television stations in markets it serves under an agreement announced Wednesday by the MSO, PBS and the Association of Public Television Stations.

The agreement includes HD programming and noncommercial multicast programming. It also provides for carriage of stations' digital signals through the period of transition from analog to digital broadcasting.

The deal covers a total of 70 stations, the parties said.

PBS has similar national digital-carriage agreements in place with Time Warner Cable and Insight Communications Co. Inc., as well as local arrangements with Comcast Corp.

“Agreements like this are a critical part of public television's commitment to universal service in the digital age, and ensuring that all viewers -- cable, satellite and over-the-air -- can have access to digital broadcasts is an essential part of any strategy to complete the digital transition," APTS CEO John Lawson said in a prepared statement.
