ESPN is bringing “The Deuce” into the high-definition world.

The network said Monday that it will launch ESPN2 HD with a college-basketball tripleheader Jan. 6.

ESPN added that throughout 2005, ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD will deliver 300 major events plus 2,000 programs, totaling 6,000 hours in HD.

Both ESPN HD services use the 720p (progressive) format.

The debut tripleheader pits DePaul at Cincinnati, Memphis at Texas and Gonzaga at Santa Clara.

“There is now no doubt that HDTV is the future of television in the United States,” ESPN vice president of strategic business planning and development Bryan Burns said in a prepared statement.

“Our commitment to ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD and the thousands of hours we are producing in this exciting new format underscores our dedication to this exciting new opportunity,” he added.
